I haven't yet gotten a bike (buying it on Sunday, a Giant Cypress women's frame), and I am already obsessed with it.

I am athletic, but my biggest problem in sticking to exercise is motivation. I love outdoor activities that feel more like fun than exercise, like hiking and skiing. I think biking will be so much fun in itself that I won't need any motivators. I have a big goal of commuting to work by bicycle, its about 12-13 miles one way.

The last bike I owned was heavy folding bike with small wide wheels, Russian-made. I went through years of convincing my parents to get me a bike because they were afraid of head trauma. Now I don't have to ask my parents and here in America we have helmets. :)

What started my obsession now (I can't wait for Sunday!) is my husband. He has an italian road bike (frame says "tomassini", but he says components might be from different sources) circa mid eighties, that he spent all his savings on (buying used) when he was a poor student it Brazil. He rode seriously there, and brought the bike with him to America 12 yrs ago. He hasn't used it for a few yrs, and this week he had it tuned up and for the second day in the row he goes riding in the evening! I am jealous, he comes home so happy and sweaty. I don't expect to keep up with him (maybe in the beginning, he is a bit out of shape), but I just want to ride. His bike is so beautiful, I am an applied physicist and have an appreciation for things mechanical. I was walking around his bike for an hour yesterday salivating. Its scratched, but so light and has something of a fancy race horse feel to it. Gosh, I didn't mean to turn it into the ode to my husband's bike. I can't wait to get mine so I have more things to talk about. :)

See you all around the forums.

P. B. Walker,

thank you for the welcome.

Since you hail from the same area, maybe you can check out my question on the "commuting" forum, maybe you have some suggestions on the route?
