Okay, so last night I joined Mark, Herb and NGlock on a hill-climbing ride in Burbank. FANTASTIC! It was 14.08 miles with 1,952 ft of climbing. And it's a butt kicker. This is Mark's ride, so I have to get info for where/when to meet (i.e. - I won't just post his address on the web unless he says I can), but anyone who wants to join on Wednesdays is welcomed! They said I could post (cause I've got the big mouth) and I hope those of you who are in the area who want a fast but excellent workout will show up. I got a grade reading of 18% or some areas of the hills we climbed! I will post pics in here next week as I forgot my camera last night but there were some gorgeous views up there! :D
Thanks ME...it was fun..tough but fun...
Glad you enjoyed yourself...at least after the 3rd climb:rolleyes:
WOW! OK now I feel like a wienie. I started a hill training class from Turtle Rock Tuesday nights. This last Tuesday we did 17 miles and 1800' of climbing. We had to cut off the last 2 miles and 600' due to time contraints (cause I'm slow and it got really dark!!!).
The instructor is really mean (no not really she is pretty cool) and has come up with some hard rides on roads I didn't even think existed. I love Summit Park. We usually do that then turn onto Turtle Ridge and then Newport Coast. We have done Spyglass and San Joaquin more times than I like to say. If any of your local OC folks want to give it a try - it's open to everyone. We meet at ShadyHill Park and leave by 6pm.

Well, I can tell you, the workout last night was amazing but short enough that I wasn't just wiped out. Griffith Park is great, but I needed a kick in the pants! I hope the OC folks can get a night ride going - it's really a great way to add a little riding during the week. :)
Oh, and Herb - yes, by the 3rd climb I could no longer feel my legs! That always helps. :p
Here is the route slip. (http://www.routeslip.com/routes/12476) RouteSlip says 3,200 feet of climbing but it is more like 1,900-2,000. Take off is 6:30pm. The route slip has you parking on the side street to 7-Eleven which has plenty of street parking. Glad to have anyone join us.

The guys were saying how strong you hit those hills, John. How did you get an extra mile in by the way?
Whats really scary is there is one part the says 50% grade???
But mainly 15-23% seems right...
thanks John
And ME I was getting up there..but strong would not be the word I would use

While waiting for Ed we went up and down Mark's block, and I did it enough to get a mile. :D

 ...sigh. Sandbagger galore. You rode up those just fine, Herb. You were right there with the rest of us! I had to switch back on some of the steepest parts just to get up 'em! I can't wait until next week. :D

I've been ramping up the hills more lately while my mileage hasn't really been increasing. Since January, here's my rough totals:
Jan 32k ft/500 miles
Feb 40k ft/550 miles
Mar 44k ft/600 miles
Apr 48k ft/500 miles
Most of my nightly rides have about 100 ft of elevation gain per mile overall.
Mark and Herb's ride is a really good one for hills, I wish I could do it more often.

Bags! No way to get over there on weeknights. It does motivate me to throw in Westridge more often when I do Mandeviille though. From my office, that's 20 miles & 2100 feet round trip. Westridge has the painful grades that make you want to cry.

Dude, are you a billy goat or what? Here are my rough stats:
Jan 6k ft/200 miles (injured knee)
Feb 11k ft/400 miles (recovering knee)
Mar 28k ft/650 miles (knee feeling better)
Apr 47k ft/575 miles (riding strong, knee pain gone!)
I've just ramped up my climbing last month for KOM. May should be a good month due to BA and HB100, over 20k/200mi.

I think cough cough...you are going to have to leave early due to a cold that only seems to hit on Wednesday afternoons! cough cough

There's a lot of hills around Pasadena and I end up getting irritated on the flats around here due to the stupid traffic lights, so I end up climbing hills instead. Now I just need to get faster at them...
You'll have a good month with those two rides for sure!

There was a fixie that looked like yours outside Zona Rosa, but I didn't get a good look at it.

Jan 32k ft/500 miles
Feb 40k ft/550 miles
Mar 44k ft/600 miles
Apr 48k ft/500 miles
Dude, you're my hero, that's awesome! 48k over 500 miles! That's especially nice as the SB trip was 50-60 feet per mile over 100 miles. That drug my April ratio down from around 88 ft/mile to 78 ft/mile
Here's my year:
Jan 12k ft/258 miles (weak)
Feb 21k ft/352 miles
Mar 33k ft/500 miles
Apr 23k ft/300 miles (sick)
I'm going to try and keep my monthly climbing at 70 feet per mile and the mileage around 400 miles/month.

I'll be the first to admit that at first the mere thought of this ride scared me. It just so happens that my parents live just above a part of this route so I did know the area well in advance. When Mark first invited me and sent me the link to the route, I had an  look on my face. I knew then and there that there was no way that I could hang and that I really had to work on my climbing. After several moths of some pretty intense hill training I decided to take Mark up on his invitation and I found that I could do the ride with no problem. I decided awhile ago that I am going to try and stick to short hill based rides as I really want to do KOM next year and I really need to improve on my climbing even more:D This is one of those short hill based rides that I intend on sticking with.

I'm not riding tonight. With the area the way it is and my lungs they way they are, it's best I avoid exercising outdoors. :( In 2005, when the Burbank Hills were burning, I tried riding and was sick with coughing for several days. You guys have fun and I'll be back out next Wednesday. Tonight I'll be at the gym.

Yeah, see I don't risk it at all. :o My throat is scratchy this morning, and I'm pretty sure it was because of the smoky air in Glendale that was coming in the vents of our building from 3-6pm yesterday. I'm just so sensitive to this crap. I'm going to look into that filter thingy.
This the brand we have been using

Is this a weekly or was it a one time ride?
It is weekly until it is not. Really, check with someone with a PM just to make sure. Tonight we do it again. When the real heat hits I sometimes change the course to a flatter 17 mile sprint workout, but it is still Wednesday eveings. Hope you can make tonight.
Great ride tonite...a bit warm but not too bad...curiouskid55 joined us tonite..another bad***** rider...
Not at all smokey or I would not have ridden...in fact it was quite clear!
FYI..we are not riding next wednesday...we are taking the spousal units up to cambria for a few days!
It would cost less to ride on Wednesday. But, there will be wine and seafood had by all. Maybe even some grab a@@. (no bikes allowed tirp :( )
Possible next ride is May 23.
