Mountain Biking - Hayes Hydros or Magura Louises

Help me decide. My new rocky mountain is on the way and i need a decision on disc brakes. I belive the hayes hfx-9, lowest model is about the same price as the Louises for employees, but Im not sure what is going to make me decide. Any suggestions?

I would do a search on some other sites about the new hfx. I have been hearing bad things. But since I don't have them I haven't been paying attention.

Honestly though I would go hayes. My other brake choice is hope.

Go with the Louise, Hayes are over hyped and the Maguras work just as well, but with mineral oil!

How can something be overhyped when everything said about them is true?

Hayes work, work well and require little or no maintenance once set-up.

Have you ever tried to bleed some Maguras? Holy heck! What a mess and they never feel "Right".

Haven't seen the Avids, but aren't they just rebadged Hope's????

I know for sure the lever is different as it creates a more linear movement for braking.

And peter I want to know how they are over hyped. Good modulation, lots of power, reasonable cost for a hydro brake (out here they are much cheaper then Magura), easy bleeding and overall maintenance and very easy to find parts if something breaks...what is the big deal with mineral oil anyways, it isn't hard to find dot4 sheesh. Doesn't sound overhyped to me.

Noway!!! Avid have been working on and refining their Hydros for years. Avid does not sell "rebadged" stuff!

Srams are rebadged something or another. Or maybe based on someone elses design.

Sram 9.0's are rebadged XT hydros. When i said overhyped i meant that they aren't way better than anything else out there on the market. The nice thing about mineral oil is the fact that you dont have to worry about spilling it and thus having to be really careful about where it goes, and if put with the wrong lines or on paint it can ruin them

I've yet to see a bleed system that I really liked. The closest was probably the shimano one, but having tried the brakes themselves I'm not exactly gung-ho about them. They didn't seem much worse than any of the others in use, but adjusting them is a pain in the butt.

For bleeding I have heard the hopes are the easiest. But I personally have never done it with hope so I am not entirely sure.

Giant MPH are a copy of Hope. XT is a refinement of Grimeca by shimano (redesigned). Sram9 is a mediocre copy of Grimeca. Avid Juicy is new. Personally i like Hayes....they made me dislike hope here in the UK because they overhype hope here...british this british that and so on....
I must add XT on your list ...they are dead easy to bleed...never need any service...loads of power and modulation.
Bottom line...since we are the first in Europe to have it...try ASAP the Goodridge brake hoses instead of any stock hoses. +20% brake power. impossible to destroy or expand, veeeery flexible and the best lever feel ever.

If anyone finds these hoses this side of the world kindly post a link. I am interested in trying these out :)

Mael i gave you a link to the UK distributor... for such an item...postage would be miiiiinimal even to the US or Canada....try it.

I considered running the SRAM discs.... 240 bucks for front and rear hydros seemed like a damn good price to me. Ended up going with Avids, tho.. and I'm pretty happy with them ultimately.
