"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Missing Race Results and Upgrade Question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've only done two races so far, so obviously I'm not expecting to upgrade anytime soon. This is just for future reference and mainly out of curiosity, but it seems as if I'm not going to get "credit" for having raced those two races.

The first one I just purchased a one day license for last fall. After I purchased my official license a couple months ago, I called USA Cycling to see if I could get that race applied to my license. I was told that the race promoter didn't submit the results so I couldn't.

Then my second race was last weekend, and while the results are displayed on the USA Cycling website, only the first 15 places or so are listed. Well I didn't place in the top 15 (in fact I DNFed!), but I still participated. The language I read describing upgrades says "experience in 10 mass start races" so I assumed that if you got pulled you still got credit for the start.

So am I just SOL on these counting towards my total number of races?

They count. Just list the 10 qualifying races when you go to upgrade, even if the USA Cycling site doesn't have them listed. Many results are not posted to the USA Cycling site, so check on Bike Reg and any local sites for results as well.

Good luck!

Couple points from a race promoter (me):
1. USA Cycling lost a lot of results submitted in March 2007 - our first three races' results went AWOL. We were told on the phone there were computer problems and they'd recover the results. However racers who reported missing results are being emailed that the promoter didn't submit results. Since USA Cycling never posted the results we went in, it's apparent they didn't recover the results. But they're not explaining to the racers that they (USA Cycling) lost the results - they're just blaming the promoter.

2. The area rep (whoever you're petitioning to upgrade) should be able to contact the promoter to verify that you have in fact raced even if the results aren't submitted. For a 5 - 4 upgrade, you simply have to start. We did have one guy who pre-reg but never picked up his number (for two races). He listed those two races as races he's "done". We told the rep simply that the numbers were never picked up.

If you enter 10 races and pick up your number, you've technically fulfilled your requirements. I'd recommend petitioning for an upgrade when you feel comfortable in the field and with the pace. That way you'll be okay when you do your first 4 race.

Hope this helps and good luck,
cdr

Of the 30+ races I did last summer, two of them showed up on USA cycling.

Don't worry about it until you're applying for your 4->3 or 3->2. To be honest, no upgrade rep is going to care enough to question any of your results going from 5 to 4. I included links to race results in my race resume to make up for the lack of info on the USA Cycling website. I think the 3s will be more likely to have their results documented, especially if I do more superweek races this summer.
