Hey, folks - I'm trying to help a friend who's just getting into commuting by bike pick out a route from Portsmouth to Dover. We're going to scout out some routes this coming week, but I thought I would see if you guys had any suggestions -- any thoughts on routes to avoid, to check out, etc.?
Thanks in advance,
Finn

No suggestions, sorry, but I went to school @ UNH and used to live in both Portsmouth and Dover and I sure miss the nice riding up there... Only escape around here is 9W.

If you find a nice route, post it. Maybe bikely.com has a few. I have to make a pilgrimage with my bike back up yonder.

From Dover Pt, go across the old General Sullivan into Newington. After crossing the bridge you can turn left and work your way to Woodbury Ave, or turn right and go into Newington Village. I can't explain it here, but from Newington Village you can work your way into Pease and into Portsmouth.

sukram,

Have you ever ridden on the eastern side of the Hudson? There's a nice bike trail that runs from Southern Westchester County (I think it starts in Tarrytown, or even maybe farther south) and it runs all of they way into Putnam County. Once you're in putnam county, there are lots of beautiful country roads that you can ride on, many of them near the drinking reservoirs for NYC. I used to live there and I enjoyed riding around there.

9W is nice, but there are also a lot of other accesible places to ride in southern NY state on the eastern side of the river that are not too far from the city.
