Just the name of the ride is painful

Mr. Beanz
05-05-07, 07:21 PM
I completed it! Started at 6:22, reached the top somewhere around 2:40(?) Ride time was 7:29 to the top, but that don't matter in timed events. I missed the time check in at the second rest stop, might get penalized 10 minutes. I asked the director, he said no biggie, so I'll have to wait for the official times.

IT WAS TOUGH. I took my Canni with the double 39/25. On the ride I was wishing I had taken my triple. On OakGlen, I asked myself why I was out there. On Damnation Alley, I asked myself again. I don't think there was one point in the ride where I thought I would make it. It was all tough!

After the clock stops at the top, I cruised down. A buddy had 2 flats and no pump. I stopped to help. He flatted again 5 miles later. Stopped again. hen he ended sagging in but I had to ride my bike in after wasting all the time at the stops with him.

If I were to do it again, which I won't, I'd lose another 10 lbs. But I'm too old for this stuff!:D

why wouldn't you??? You did GREAT!!! ... is this the first time you've ridden this ride???

ok so i left @ 6:36 arrived at the top @ 1:37 which is 7:01 total time. That's about 30 minutes faster than the preview ride. I took WAY shorter breaks and not suprisingly my actual time on bike increased 10 minutes. I kinda bombed out after the angelus oaks stop and had a pretty hard time dragging myself those last few to the top.

most of the day i felt great and was all set to destroy my previous time by a significant margin but those last 20 were the slowest i've ever done.

so anyway good day, and the jersey is slick

how'd everyone else fare?

Yup, my first time on this ride. Have done the Bear 3 times. Training for this ride wasn't as good as I trained for the Bear rides. Prolly cause I spent plenty of time with Gina on the trail instead of hitting long GMR rides.

I say I wouldn't but that's the challenge, trying to take some time off next year. But depends on Gina. I wouldn't discourage her to ride so that I could do the hill rides. I say maybe I wouldn't do it again cause I enjoyed my time with Gina on the bike. I'm getting soft. In the old days, I would have made her clean the house while I rode!:D....Right now I just don't have the drive to lose the weight and train like a madman. Old age?...Hey, but I did good for a clydesdale!:D

you just need to join Herb on his crazy hill climb nights... that'll do it for next year! :p You did well!!! Good Job!

Oh yeah, thanx to Jason for the info! I really felt like turning back. I ran into him at rest stop #3. I was feeling fried. Watching White carbon dude fly by didn't help!:D

Jason filled me in on the climb. Then I saw some light at the end of the tunnel. Really helped, thanx J!:D

Sorry I missed you Mr. Beanz. I have to say the best part of the day was seeing so many BF'ers, many for the first (official) time. Rode with WC Dude for a stretch near the end (he is as strong a rider as he is nice). Got to at least wave at Jason, and Grumpy P. Chatted various amounts with George, Brandy, Caligurl and her husband, Phil, MaDDmike... who am I forgetting. At the top, Phil pointed out even more BF'ers (some I hadn't even heard of!). It made the day so much more enjoyable.

Congrats, Mr. Beanz, Clutchy and Vance!!! I can't wait to hear more and see pics. I'm sure scores of other BFers will be pouring in soon. You guys are amazing. :)

did you have the cool retro jersey on (got any in small you wanna give away ? :) ) So good to chat with the lot of BF. I need to order the jersey now.

PS if anyone happened to pick up a small polar bottle or a clip on bike bag (bottle fell off the road before jack rabbit, bike bag, no idea.) please do let me know.

They just do that to scare people away and keep the numbers down. You know, half the ride is downhill, how hard can it be :p

Congrats to all who attempted this one, it's on my list, for "next year" :D

My total time was 6:56...I felt strong and paced myself well all day. Oddly, I cramped 2 miles from Angelus Oaks...again. This time I opted to just check in with the timekeeper and kept rolling, knowing that I would have the descent to recover on. I think I cut 37 minutes of of my BA Preview time.

wasn't there a website at one point for the Socal BF people with their pics (if not then there should be). Felt kinda bad when I didn't recogzine Ms. Brandy. Plus outside the few people wearing the bike forums jersey all cyclists pretty look alike.

Plus how awkward is it to ask "Excuse me are you Grumpypig?"

It was nice to finally meet many of the BFers out there. Mr. Beanz, I like how you have your name on your bike, that is the only way I would have known it was you. I saw Jason and Grumpypig on Damnation Alley (when I passed him he was :) smiling I think he should change his name to NotSoGrumpyPig). Vance was looking cool in his retro jersey (very strong climber I might add), my legs blew up right before the top, I was pushing hard all day trying to get in the sub 6's but ended up with 6 hours and 5 minutes according to my stop watch. The time keeper at the top told me my time but I was too fried to remember. I hope to see you all at the Heartbreak 100!

I have deep respect for everyone who did this. First, because you did it ... what an amazing accomplishment. Second, because I wouldn't even consider doing this crazy event. It's probably the same reason why I won't do the Death Ride, and Climb to Kaiser. But then again, I said the same thing about doing the triple crown ... and here I am ... 1 down, 2 to go.

Congrats everybody!

I really need to sleep (woke up at 3 AM, supposed to be at work around 6 AM tomorrow), so I'll keep this short and follow up with a more detailed report tomorrow. I largely cruised this ride, trying to ride well within myself and not blow up. As a result, I took forever and a day. Okay, not quite... more like 9:07 to the top (8:20 of which was on the bike) and about 11:20 total (10:20 on the bike). That's what I get for not riding enough... I have to really watch myself and not thrash my leg, back, or abdominal muscles on tougher rides. But whatever... I finished. Right now, all that really hurts is my abs, though I wouldn't be surprised if my legs hurt tomorrow.

It was great to see so many of you out there doing a good job of representing the BF group and to meet so many of you for the first time.

Thanks ME...I truly felt very strong all day and really enjoyed this ride. Knowing the route helped tremendously in my effort to pace myself appropriately, and it paid off. No pics...my verytinypocketed Velo Sport jersey overfloweth with stuff...no room for a camera. :(

Oh, and I was telling George that nothing significant happened on this ride, so I don't know what to write about. :p I just plugged away all day and made good (for me) time. I will say (and you'll hate this) that riding with music...some techno that George put on my iPod for me, helped so much to motivate me and keep my cadence consistent on the climbs.

Edited to add...the music also kept me from going crazy! On a ride like this, I will spend hours analyzing and calculating times, average speed, etc to a point that borders insanity...lol. I couldn't calculate over the sound of the music. ;)

Actually, now that some dinner has sat in my stomach for a while, even my abs don't hurt. I definitely could have rode harder today. (That I picked up the pace from 4.5 MPH to 11 MPH when the finish line was in sight meant I had plenty left in reserve.) I don't know how much harder, though. And I didn't dare try to find out since a bad case of cramping could have ruined my ride. Today was largely about riding "smart" to maximize the chances of meeting a goal, the goal being simply to finish within the time cutoffs.

Now, you need to stop the busy student BS and eat right! Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner EVERY day and don't make me have to tell you again! (tough love, darling, tough love :p)
What are you gonna do about it if I don't? You gonna come down to San Diego to do something about it? :D

Brandy passed me on the only part of the ride (before the finish line was in sight, anyway) where I rode at a pace that clearly wasn't an endurance tempo pace. Yup... she passed me near the top of Oak Glen. Despite my attempts to catch back up on the descent, I never saw her again until she was on her way down.

I am one tired Pig. I took some pictures but not as many as I wanted to. I'll download them tomorrow. WhiiteCarbonDude got to see me drop everything out of my pocket as I fumbled for the camera. I have to work on that.

I am mulling over several things I could have done to ride better today but I did manage to beat my time last year's time by a healthy 28 mins. Ride time 6:03 total time was 6:18 I believe.

Good job Brandy! You really kicked some butt. There were some great climbers out there today. I can't count the wimmins that spanked me on the way up. And not in a good way!:D

To do the times you guys did must have taken some dedication and hard training. My hat is off to all of you!

Mr. Beanz
05-05-07, 11:27 PM
Mr. Beanz, I like how you have your name on your bike, that is the only way I would have known it was you.

I use this bike on organized rides. Everyride, there are about 20 people that ride by and say,"Mr. Beanz!".

The same today. Glad you introduced yourself. The other 19, I had to ask,"Are you Clutchy? Are you Lopez? Are you Jason? Are you grumpy?"...I get lots of strange looks!:D

Now I can officially say I'm the slowest climber in the bunch, started at 6:10, and finished at 3:35. All in all it was not a bad ride. I just took my time and tried to enjoy it. From Barton Flats up, it was a real mental challenge. You just get tired of all the climbing. I guess I'm going to have to get an Ipod. 3 out of the 6 people that I was riding with, said they couldn't have finished the ride without them. It really took their minds off the monotony of the climbing.

Well, you know I'm a hardass on the whole music thing, but I will say, you were climbing, so anything that motivated is a plus (I would have quit, and I'm worried about Sea to Summit). Regardless of your IPOD use ;), you represented the women quite well. :) Hell.. you represented the MEN well!:D

Congratulations to everyone who finished. This is something to be proud of!

Well, I finished...barely! I made the mistake of ridding harder than I should have. I did finish with a better time than last year. Last year 6:39.....This year 6:18. I must be doing something right.

Speaking of doing something right, Caligurl did a great ride! She also improved her time from last year ( 8:20 ) to………………….…drum roll please…….…….....( 7:32 )! All most an hour off last years time!

It was great to see all of the BF folks. Sorry I was not as friendly as I should have been at the top of onyx but the pain prevented any niceties.

Feel better this morning but that could just be the coffee! Of course Caligurl was up early doing a work out…fricken crazy.

Congrats! I think this means every participant from the SoCal BikeForums group finished the entire ride. Congrats again, everyone.

I'm feeling pretty good at the moment. A tiny tiny bit of a saddle sore, but no muscle aches. Just way too sleepy this morning, so I rescheduled some of my lab work from early morning to late afternoon.

 Great job on both accounts. And tell Cali - SHE was representing too! I'm really being sincere in my amazement. I'm about to head out on a recovery ride (for Bob not me) into the hills, and I'm dreading it (not the ride, but the climb for sure as I'm out of climbing shape). I can only imagine the pain you guys went through yesterday.

And I agree with Jason - everyone who rode this ride should be proud of themselves and out treating themselves to pancakes this morning (might I suggest a place :D)
