So I recently joined an adult basketball league, which has been great. Thanks to all the biking I do, I find no problem running the length of the court again and again. But I'll tell you...between all of the jumping and quick cuts, my knees are being put through their paces

So my question is what types of exercise do you find compliment a cycling-based body or physique?

Running is the closest obviously. Other good exercises are cross country skiing, inline/ice skating and a little bit of moderate weight lifting.

A couple of good complimentary exercises are lunges and step-ups.

I've been doing lunges to go with my cycling lately and I think they help. Lunges strengthen all of the muscles that do the cycling movement, but they also strengthen the supporting muscles that stabilize the leg and knee. Do them CAREFULLY... do not bend the knee past 90 degrees, pay attention to form on each repetition, and start off with no weight until you get this down. If you overdo them at first, you'll be sorry the next two days!

Also, doing core work - abs, back, obliques, etc. - is always a good idea. You'll feel better cycling, sitting, standing, having sex, paying bills (well, maybe not), running, whatever. Here's a great page with photos and tons'o'moves. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=486
