Commuting - What bicycle infrastructure you have for your commute?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was impressed very much by the "German National Cycling Plan 2002 to 2012. Measures to promote cycling in Germany"

Impressed is the wrong word. Stunned. Petrified. I cycled in Germany. This is one of the best places for cycling and touring. But they will get it even better.

Here is the link to this National Cycling Plan on the official site of the German Government: http://www.bmvbw.de/English-Content-.454.12805/National-Cycling-Plan-2002-to-2012.htm

So. What infrastructure does the usual commuter have nowadays?

(Sorry. I messed up the third line in the poll, but I can not edit the poll for some reason. It is still understandable though. Perhaps, a moderator can remove the gibberish from the 3rd line of the poll?)

paved roads, some bike trails, lots of showers (I work at university, but rarely shower, prefering to save time & water by using a washrag...) and "lock" the bike in my office. (there *is* cycle parking, but it's far away, and I'm lazy...

I voted wrongly. I have the locker. Even 2. One in the office, and one iron locker in the common locker room.

I also have the paved road, but not a direct trail to the office. I also have the parking lot. But they charge for the bike as for the motocycle. I lock it in the hall near the office for free.

Shower is far away, I also use washrag.

Tom, where do you store the bike in the office? Do you have a rack? Or do you use some room? Does anybody mind your bike inside the office?

Here in the suburbs of Detroit I have none of that. I ride paved roads, wash in the bathroom, and keep my bike in my office.

Hi Max,

Funny you should ask...can't you see it? It's right over here...

oops...as far as minding the bike, they mind that less than they mind me stripping and dancing around nekkid. :p

I ride in on paved roads that are broken up and in poor condition, I keep my bike in my office and clean up with a wash rag and water.

I had to vote for the last choice. No locker, no shower, no paths or bike lanes.
At my last job I rode on busy streets and side streets.
I parked (locked) my bike in the warehouse.
I cleaned up and changed into my work clothes in the men's bathroom.

I could use bike trails in my area but I don't. They have too many walkers walking three abreast. Besides I make better time riding the road. I am a motorcycle mechanic so I can get by without a shower, I just wipe down and park by my work area. I think most employers could care less about alternitive forms of transportation.

My route is 100% usrban/suburban surface streets. Philadelphia has multi-use paths, but none that go in my direction. I park in my office. I have access to a shower but it's not necessary; wipes and rubbing alcohol do the job.

Why would I need any 'bicycle infrastructure?' Cycling is the simplest thing in the world as far as transportation goes. All I need is the roadway and right to operate on it.

I will admit that I get to park my bike in my office. But then again, I wouldn't work anywhere that I couldn't.

Here in St. Louis there are bike lanes, but none that go to my place of work. I've found a route to work that minimizes interaction with heavy traffic and areas of criminal activity. I do use the bike paths for a few hundred yards as I pass through Forest Park.

There is covered bicycle parking here at the medical school, and I use the gym showers. They have lockers available, but I just transport my clothes in a backpack or panniers.

I don't work in an office but in a workshop & out in a rail yard but we have good facility's for cyclists , a bike shelter in the staff car park though I put mine in our workshop on top of a spare bench.Good showers & a changing room with 2 lockers each + a working drying room for wet weather gear , so were lucky by most standards :) All the roads round were I work are full of heavy trucks ,forkhoists ect 24-7 as its a port area so we just have to be aware of the dangers when cycling in the vacinity . At the moment theres only 2 of us who cycle commute every day but last summer we were up to 8 :)

I have a bike trail and quiet paved road until the last kilometre but even then it's not so bad.

I work at the Montreal airport so there are a lot of people working there.

There are four place to lock my bike and I'm usually alone (never more than three bikes). I could place my bike in the car parking lot, which is somewhat guarded but this parking is way too far (there's a bus going from the parking to the terminal!).

I have a locker but I wouldn't need it. I work alone in a office that used to hold 20+ workers so there's a lot of space. I just hang my stuff all over the place.

No shower but I have a kitchen which is for our company only (in theory). I can wash a little there. I usually just crank up the fan on the A/C to cool down.

We're supposed to move to a new location on the airport site before the winter and maybe I won't even be able to commute. :( If I can, it'll be great though. I'll have a small building for myself and some terrain. I'll be able to work on my bike on the job!

No shower or locker; however, I park my bike in the back room. There is a short section of "river" trail that I ride, but the vast majority of my commute is on the paved and striped shoulder of the local roadways.

I'm really lucky, I've got

Roads all the way
Bike racks inside a secure area ( Complete with CCTV )
Lockers
Showers
and the ultimate luxury for a commuting cyclist - A drying room

Ok most of this ain't provided specifically for cyclists but for the staff in general.

well it depends, when I go to the university I take a 6 lane road almost the whole way there (except for the last mile) with no lane, trail, shower or special parking (I lock it up outside with 2 locks).

However, when I go to work, I could take a bike path (but choose not to) no shower, but there is a indoor place to park my bike and a locker for clothes... so work is a bit easier, but I enjoy a challenge :)

I have fairly bike-friendly city streets between my house and office. We have lockers and showers so I usually bring in my clothes for the week on Sunday night.

I work for a state agency but the building is a private landlord. Their corporate policy is that no bikes are allowed in the building. However, the building manager told me I could bring it in when I'm working late. The bike locker I use during the day is across the street at the Capitol next to the staff/lobbyist entrance and 10 feet from the CHP office, so I'd say it's fairly safe.

All in all, I've got it pretty good.

I have an excellent route through mostly suburban streets with reasonable traffic volumes, park my bike in the basement of the veterinary clinic (next to the pill vials & boxes of "sharps" waiting for pick-up), and wash up in the dark room. If it is really hot & muggy, I hose my head off in treatment room. Best of all, I can use a washer & dryer (as long as I don't mind a deposit of dog & cat hair). I scatter my gear in radiology and on my bike, a locker is unnecessary in such a small business.

I have access to a very nice bike path but rarely use it for commuting even though it passes right by my workplace. I prefer the street for commuting.

I have parking. I work in a warehouse and everyone who rides simply parks inside.

I change in the restroom.

No shower. There are paper towels and a sink. I use a quite powerful antiperspirant. :D

I think you need an option for things we have but don't use. There are bike paths on my commute - I ignore them, I'm safer and faster on the road. There is a shower at work - I don't use it. I rarely leave home early enough to have time for a second shower at work. There is no special bike parking at my work, and I've learned that even though the car park is inside a garage, it's not necessarily all that safe.

I have billions of US$ worth of city streets and highways, and a shower that I don't use (my commute is downhill and quite short). I lock my bike into the server room on most days, because my office is too small.

I answered I only have bike parking. I wasn't sure how to answer that since I created my own bike parking inside my office complex.

Everyone screams about pollution problems and traffic jams yet companies still have not built an adequate infrastructure for cyclist and walkers. Granted I don't "need" path, besides that is something the cities and counties need to do, but it would be great to have showers, lockers, and a safe place to secure the bike-hopefully out of the elements. OK, the dream is over.

I can ride a paved road or a gravel dirt road. I can put bike in basement of office which is locked.

i bike on the shoulder of a 4 lane highway but most trafic is heading into town as im leaving. no showers no locker heck i dont even lock my bike up i just lean it agianst the building and store every thing in my trailer.... the restroom i use is rather interseting as it has no ceiling its just cinder block walls about 10 ft high in the middle of the building. i asked where we were supose to go incase of a tornado and i was told by my foreman that you would find him in th culvert by the road but i could do what ever i wanted. lol great plan
