I won't be on my ss but I do want advice or a list of equipment I can consider essential before I start.

for me, i think it was the water proof windbreak jacket shell that rolls up into its own pocket that i kept in my bag...lifesaver for days you didn't think we're gonna be rainy/snowy or rediculously windy, other than that, helmet, backup battery, extra tube, C02 cartrige, that kinda jazz

lights, spare batteries, light weight breathable raingear that packs in its own pocket, co2 inflater and spare cartridges, mini pump, spare tubes and patch kit tools, water and some food stuffs (trust me you will be eating all the time), some cash for the oh crap that was my last tube/patch/ co2 cartridge, mudguards, and I like a front basket it takes the weight of for a while some times and you can haul more it also acts as a bumper...

thanks for all the replies. I stepped out for a minute. It seems like the jist of everything is prepare for anything. I wonder if I can get the company to pay for some of this gear. I will also be working night shifts 10pm-5am so I should invest in some lights. I was wondering about the basket thing does having a front basket make steering more difficult? Also, I am delivering food, subs and fountain sodas, are there any special baskets or basket inserts for drinks? Does food delivery make me less of a messenger?

Eat a lot of children. You need to keep your calories up if you are going to be burning them. I just hate small children, despite the famine being over.

i see what you did there

iamarapgod

Well I'd say you're more of a bicycle delivery person, as messenger would imply you carry some kind of message. But food delivery is the way to go. Hourly wage, shorter shifts, tips, and free food(unless they are d1ckz)

Modest Proposal
05-07-07, 10:46 PM
My message is delicious food at affordable prices with friendly and efficient service. Also, I get a shift meal if I work 8 hours but I am usually scheduled for between 4-6 hours. The employee discount however, is 50% off.

forget all of this advice if you are a pizza or sub boy

all you need is no shame

Modest Proposal
05-07-07, 10:48 PM
There is probably more shame in hoofing it back to the shop with my bike on my back than being overly prepared. Also, its not like my work uniform is embarassing or anything. But the name, Jimmy John's, is a little ridiculous.

I agree it seems that way for all of the reasons rapgod mentioned. They are all true and I make 5% commission on the sales I deliver.

food deliver is good sometimes get a front rack and make some cup holder for your self

doofo

retem you are tooooo forgiving

why has no one asked why he titled the thread the way he did
?

Modest Proposal
05-07-07, 11:10 PM
I was hasty in my quest for knowledge and used the more common bike messenger over bicycle sandwich delivery guy. Also, that has no pop in a thread title.

doofo
05-07-07, 11:13 PM
youll have more pop than you can handle soon enough there jimmy john

You can't fax food, but it's a little bit of a biznatch sometimes because people go out and get stuff themselves when it's nice out and order in when it's crappy, so you work hardest when conditions are worst. What little document/package work is still out there isn't very weather sensitive. This is all second hand, but I've heard it from many, many people.

I don't really care frankly dude is asking for advice I don't see the sense in flaming him

reason one: he didn't display arrogance or some form of I know everything and I am coller than you

reason two: he actually is accepting our advice and considering
reason three: I think he is genuinley interested in any help h can get

now if you want to get serious about this get a mountain bike and air down the front tire so you don't spill soda all over the place

get a shallow wald delivery basket 20bucks about any bike shop will have em
get some big hose clams and a sheet of milar to make cup holder and basically attach em o the corners and make tubes

BuddyMike

I wasn't trying to flame him with the children comment. I actually like his board name.

mike, it was doofo I think retem was referring to.

retem, I have an old giant rincon mtb but I didn't think it would be as efficient as my road bike. Morgantown also has alot of hills and the rincon is crazy heavy.

doofo, my name actually is James. Think calling myself Jimmy will get me better tips?

hey man I am just saying that if you have soda in cups it tend to get all over if you hit a bump on a hard skinny tire a soft fat tire will cushion it some so thats all I was suggesting

Seriously, +1Billion. You need a basket. It is damn near impossible to deliver without one. Also, you want higher volume softer tires.

Food delivery is not a messenger job, but that buzz word makes it seem cooler.

I've heard food delivery is a better way to make money than real messengering. Welcome to the exciting world of employment.

Look to the nyc food delivery guys- old rigid mtb, with the biggest basket they make on the front.

If you're not too tall, a bmx bike with a long seatpost might be great- fat tires and plenty of basket space up front.

I like this thread. It points out the ridiculous notion that being a messenger (delivers docs and boxes) is considered more respectable then delivering food on a bike. Essentially they're the same job. In fact, its more essential for a food delivery guy to deliver with speed considering about half of his packages must get to the client hot. I will reflect on this.

Food delivery guys have to put baskets on their bikes and don't get to wear awesome bags.

13. it sucks. the only place that i've found to hire me is that wierd guy that lives down the street.

i'm not sure about about it, though. he makes me feel funny.

for real though, it's hard to find a summer job that's close to my college. i'm taking a summer class and need something part time in that area that i can ride to or take the bus.

You'll need a big, big front basket. Probably a rear rack too. And one of those helmet mounted can holders with the tube to drink from. Probably wear a sandwich board so people can order "on the go"

And don't forget to only use one training wheel.

well, i really wanted to look like a messenger since it was in fashion last year, so i bought all the accessories to complete my look. first you need to get a bunch of tattoos, you can have temporary ones put on until you get tired of it. buy some dickies work pants and cut them off below the knee, leave a fringe (it makes your look more genuine) remember to beat them up a little bit with grease and sandpaper so you aren't mistaken for a wannabe. then you need a huge messenger bag, fill it up with all sorts of stuff so you don't look like ur not gettin any drops, others will respect u if they think ur carrying a lot of heavy stuff. wear a bandana wrapped around ur head, grow a beard, and some neat fingerless gloves.

make sure ur bike is a true track frame without drilling for brakes or cable guides, or u wont be considered a true Jedi.

thats it
