I can't stop watching Judas Priest's glorious '82 Live Vengance DVD. When do the 1980's start again? Soon, hopefully?

Morbid Angel, Gorguts, Carcass, Atheist are some faves. Unfortunately death/black metal peaked a long while ago, and im not too interested in power metal or the various "core" styles. As an aside, i think cenotaph's "riding our black oceans" is one of the best albums for running/biking :)

Trivium is dope, but I'm an ol' school Sabbath fan. The new school sucks, and everyone sounds like the cookie monster on meth.

i like sabbath too. as great as they were, just imagine how awesome they would have been without tony iommi.

I already know what that band sounds like....It's called Ozzy Osbourne. :) And yes, they rock.

and to combine this thread with another,

priest did a couple of covers that were better than the originals;

diamonds and rust (not the remastered bonus track on rocka rolla, the version on sin after sin)

green manalishi (with the 2 pronged crown) - a great "live" song

DragonForce (http://www.myspace.com/dragonforce)(if they count)
Older Metallica (pre-black album, the stuff that's actually metal)
Job for a Cowboy (http://www.myspace.com/jobforacowboy)

I've been into metal ever since hearing Judas Priest's Unleashed in the East in 1979. I've been playing drums since around that time too. I always stick with the heavier stuff, thrash in the 80's and early 90's and death metal these days. I actually got back into cycling to help with the cardio for my drumming now that I'm getting older.

I'm another big fan of The Sword. Great album to do laps, running or biking. I'm an somewhat more old school dude, but I still say the new Slayer album KILLS. Comets on Fire is another good one, as is Mastodon.

Another new-ish band in the Sword vein is Priestess. It's a bit more traditional metal than the Sword's retro-ish Monster Magnet sound, but it's great on the road.

And I'll repeat that Slayer's new album is an incredible sports record. Despite their classic status, I'm not a repeated listener of the 1980s albums. But Christ Illusion is just a great modern metal album, with plenty of hooks and catchy riffs and choruses. It's a great biking album. Mastodon's Blood Mountain is another one, but it's a bit more mathematical, like a speed metal version of Rush.

Although from my old-school 1980's perspective I'm perplexed by many of the recent flavors of "metal", it's good to see metal still going in some form. It seemed to be headed into the sunset quickly when that lightweight "grunge" kiddie-rock and "industrial" noise took over in the mid-1990's.

However, things just went in different directions and under my radar for a while. I've only occasionally bought new metal since about 1992. Hardcore death metal didn't do anything for me, and the 1980's bands were losing their edge. Metallica went "rock". Megadeth, Anthrax, Exodus and Testament got boring. Death Angel and Possessed and others disbanded. Fates Warning got too weird. Slayer held out the longest, but became a bit less creative and edgy, though still good enough to follow. Most of the rest disappeared or got bland.

However, Grip Inc's first two albums were a bright point. In the late 1990's there were some interesting developments. Lord Weird Slough Feigh's first two albums were spectacular, though they ran out of good ideas fast. I also loved Samael. Somebody else I'm forgetting, too. Then the reunions started, which were fun, but not really as good as the original stuff from 20 years ago. The John Arch experiment was interesting nostalgia, but can't compare with the original Fates Warning material. Mostly I concentrated on collecting NWOBHM and 1980's stuff I didn't get back-in-the-day. I still keep checking new stuff occasionally. I really like one of Children of Bodom's recent ones, though it's not quite up to the standards set in the glory days of 1984-1988.

Also:

Suicidal Tendencies
Anthrax (original lineup)
Iron Maiden (Killers to Beast era)
Rhapsody

Went to see Black Sabbath/Megadeth/Machine Head a few weeks ago. They all rocked!!!!!
I'm listening right now to Megadeth's "The System Has Failed" and "Rust in Peace". Take no prisoners, take no s*** :D
37 years old and going strong :)

Rust in Peace might be the zenith of 1980's speed/thrash metal. Things went precipitously downhill for the genre after that.

the new Megadeth is terrific, have a listen. Bought the new Ozzy yesterday, sounded pretty decent. Sabbath still rules the genre. Still don't understand the dig on Iommi in an earlier post, he's pretty much written every decent metal riff out there. Saw the Heaven and Hell concert and he's still got it. Geezer still kicks ass on the bass as well. The new Slayer gets lots of play here as well.

yes. he came up with some memorable riffs. the begining riff to iron man (along with smoke on the water) is one of the first songs guitarists learned to play (from my generation anyway). tony also made the powerchord a staple of hard rock.

however;

i've never been a fan of the sg except for angus young's early, bluesy rock days. i really, really don't like iommi's sound most of the time. and he's really not very impressive "technically." then again, he IS disabled. taking that into consideration, he's almost as good as that no-armed guy that plays with his feet.

as far as the ozzy-era sabbath goes, i liked tony, et. al. songwriting better towards the end before they kicked ozzy out.

i've only heard one song off the new ozzy. his singing reminded me of his sabbath sound. zakk wylde's song-writing sounded pretty obvious from what i heard. i read some reviews of the new cd on amazon. a lot of people ripped it a new one. some loved it. i went on to read other reviews by the people who liked it. their other reviews gave me the impression that they're morons. oh well, i don't care what other people think of it. i'm buying it. i buy all of ozzy's new studio efforts.

I've seen them a couple of times in smaller venues and Lemmy does indeed kick ass. Not bad for a guy who will very soon be eligible for social security. Motorhead's last few albums are also quite good.

habernac, the band goes into long instrumentals when Ozzy suddenly forgets lyrics or otherwise can't get through a song. His body might be doing better, but his mental condition is sadly diminished. :(

yeah, that was his last tour. The new album is the first he's ever written and recorded totally sober. We'll see if he's improved when reports of Ozzfest come in.

Soil is awesome...can't wait to see them again. Get True Self, if you haven't already.

Disturbed is cool.

I don't know if Staind is considered metal, but I love them.

Megadeth has been great from day one.

Not too many mentions of Metallica. Never has a band gotten so old, so quick. A shame, really.

I still like metallica...im even a fan of the black album and fuel. Although I really do like Kill em all and ride the lightning.
Alot of diehard Metallica fans will say anything from the black album and up sux but i like it.

I also like alot of staind music too. i saw them in NYC last year, very good live band.
