Allright, I just got a new saddle from ebay. Its an old Selle Italia Batavus and its never been mounted. I went to put it on and the rails are just a little wider than my seatpost (thomson) is made for. I can squeeze the saddle and get the rails to flex in and fit, but I am not sure if its supposed to work like that. I don't want rails shooting out white I ride.

Has anybody had this happen? or know what to do about it?

i've mounted saddles on a seatpost that was too narrow, it was squeaky and annoying but aside from that there were no problems but that's a pretty substantial problem. it was only short term use, i can imagine if its a plastic shell saddle that the rails could pull out or crack the shell but i don't know of that happening in real life

It sounds a little bit mickey mouse, but steel is real and if the plastic doesn't break the rails won't. If you have adequate torque I can't see the rails shooting out either. Though its doable, personally I might get a new saddle and throw the batavus in the parts bin (since the seatpost sounds nicer)---save it for another bike.
