Classic & Vintage - Who else besides Cycle Art and Joe Bell?

I'm looking to restore my Gios Torino. I've seen and sent other people's bikes to Cycle Art back in the 80's and I have Joe Bells brochure. Who else can do these frames with decals and all that? I could use an extra h2o boss. Dang old bikes only had one and its gonna be over 100 today in Socal.

Dr.Deltron, (not sure if he will add braze-ons though), Doug Fattic, Assenmacher, Mike Barry, certainly there are others who could do that as well.

Some painters do excellent work but have limited paint colors or types. Places like CycleArt seem to do better at doing exact restorations, down to original decals/paints and colors. So, if you just want paint, lots of choices. If you want exact replica, fewer choices.

Any frame painters in the Northeast?

If you want "true" Gios blue make sure the painter has done one before. Something about shooting it over the proper color base coat to get it right. Then again if you're adding braze-ons "correct" might not be that important.

If you are on the West Coast you might try Keith Anderson in Oregon.

He's affordable and knows how to paint lugged bikes. I've never used him personally, but I have seen his work up close. The braze-ons will not be a problem for him either.

Franklin Frame in Ohio. He did my LeJeune, redoing the chrome, gold lug accents, red/white/blue banding between chrome and paint, repaired the Simplex derailleur D/O, treated the frame with FrameSaver, and added H2O bottle bosses for $550.

Just don't be in a hurry to get your frame back.

Cheap is cheap. You are reasonably close to Joe Bell, GO! Take it to him, and pick it up, be happy except for the wallet. Franklin Frames did a good job for Mr. Travers, but you will need to ship, bad.

Ask Joe if he has the Gios blue dialed in, I bet he does, if any questions pay for a sprayout test, test, don't guess, been elsewhere with a poor color match, not worth the trauma.

I'd choose a painter that's willing to use Dupont Imron in spite of the health hazards. Joe Bell uses Imron exclusively. He says it costs him $300 a gallon.

As I understand it (feel free to correct me, Dr. Deltron), getting a "true" Gios blue will be very difficult. That was a cobalt blue. It had real cobalt in it to give it that wonderful hue and depth. Good luck getting that past the EPA, even with a Republican administration in place. So a good painter can get it pretty darn close, but probably can't quite get the full effect, unless you go somewhere that doesn't have enivironmental laws or workplace protection statutes.

Baylis did my Super Record and it's right. Said the key was the undercoat which has to be a certain red. But that's why he gets the big bucks (humor implied).

Yes, Gios blue IS a very unique color. And I think I have a can of it lurking somewhere in the dusty reaches of old paint cans. It's actually from Gios, and the label is all in Italian. :p

Just checked the tracking number info - says the Cooper made it to SF and is "on FedEx vehicle for delivery" as of a little before 7 this morning! :D I assume it will still be white, and not Gios blue. :p

Just MHO, but I believe Dr. D is capable of doing as good a technical restoration as anyone. The quality of his work is evident on my '87 Paramount.

First time poster -- great forum. It's nice to know that I am not alone in my appreciation for these wonderful examples of real artistry and craftsmanship.

FWIW...Cycle Art does not have Gios decals. I contacted them last week regarding my '86 Gios Torino "Professsional" and they suggested I source the decals myself. I think I might give Dr. Deltron a try -- his location is perfect; hopefully I can drop off the bike on my way to the Monterey Historics this summer.
