I actually like Tour athletes to abandon during the Tour as opposed to being a DNS.
There's drama and a certain amount of bravery in that poignant moment of pulling to the side of the road and taking the number off.

even worse, iirc he didn't get into the team car, he got into the broom wagon when he pulled out.
