What BCD for a crank would give me the most options when it came to purchasing chain wheels? I can't find anything track specific in 130. What about 144?

I can't find anything track specific in 130.
Both Stronglight and TA make 130BDC track cranks (love my Stronglights) and TA make a whole range of 1/8" 130BCD rings from 38 to 50t. Peter White Cycles stocks it all.

144 has long been a defacto 'standard' for track cranks. You'll find the greatest selection of used 1/8" track specific chainrings in this bcd, plus you're more likley to be able to borrow/lend rings with others at the track.
Miche cranks use 135bcd (limits you to Miche brand in 1/8") and other brands eg stronglight use 130bcd. If you don't want track-specific rings then note that Campag road are 135bcd and Shimano road are 130bcd and are generally cheaper than track-specific 1/8" stuff.
'track specific' usually means 1/8" (though you can get 3/32" also) and no ramps, pins, cutaways etc for shifting.

Not wishing to pick holes but Gebhardt (ie http://www.soniccycles.co.uk/gebhardt.php) definitely make track specific 1/8" 135BCD chainrings. I could swear there are some others too.
But that said, Micksters advice about 144bcd is spot on. Its the best path to take if you're going to race.

you're right fp, forgot about Gebhardt. When I tried to order one for an old Miche crank Helmut at sonic said they weren't currently available, although they were listed in the gebhardt inventory. Suspect that's changed by now and you can get hold of 'em. Don't know of any other track specific 135s though.

You should get 144. That said:
For 135, Miche offers rings from 46-53, so just stick with them.
For 130, Sugino Messenger ring in 130, 42-48t, and Sugino standard 130, 46-50t.
There's also the Rocketring (gasp) BMX chainring. It fits 110 and 130 BCD, and it is dirt cheap. The only problem is that is 38-48 only, so no big gears...
