Mountain Biking - pics of the stumpy, post your bike pics as well!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Check it
after replacing the terrible seat and brakes i'm a set of tires away from the best xc bike under $1600 around (IMO), at least i haven't found any better.

i 'd like to know what people think and for you guys to post pics of your bikes. sorry about the quality i had to eff with the pic to get it to fit on the site.

You might consider a jpg instead of a png, it helps in the quality:size department.

I don't really consider stumpies race bikes. I think that title would begin with S-Works. And even then, I wouldn't leave the bike stock. I think they're great trailbikes though. My bike is in the pic thread with most everyone else's.

the m5 frame is around 100grams lighter than the stumpy, and the m4 frame is stronger. i would be interested in what you consider a "race" bike.

Sweet bike nismo. For everybody else, dont post pictures of your bikes. Nismo, check out this link. http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?threadid=19025 thanks. Dil, you might not consider it a race bike but any resonable quality bike can be....mostly depends on the rider. That stumpy can definately be raced as is.

What would you do to modify an S-Works hardtail, out of curiousity? I've checked the specs and the only problem i can find is the seat, and that just a matter of preference.

BTW thanks klien.

I suppose that is pretty subjective. I think of a 'race bike' as something that is made with racing in mind, and is best suited to it. And thereby it is less suited to most anything else. A prime example in my thinking would be the epic. The things practically come with rockets attached, but they are definately not a do-anything trail bike. I hope that makes as much sense to you guys as it does to my disfunctional brain.

Dil...you made perfect sense to me. Thats my line of thinking. But I do think in the lower classes anything can be 'raced' :)

All I said is that it can be raced.

1. I never said that my bike was a race bike.

2. I would actually rather race my frame seeing as how it is 3lbs lighter that the S-works epic model.

3. I never said that my bike was a race bike.

4. If i was goin to race a full suspension bike with only 3.5inches of travel i would get a racer-x, a fuel, or NRS. These are bikes I would consider "race" bikes.

I think you're getting a little defensive for no reason. I never meant to insult your selection. I'm a pretty big fan of Specialized bikes.

I replied thinking you said race bike, not xc bike. Did you change it? I suppose I could have misread it.

This is an argument I would love to have a little closer to the end of the season. I have a feeling that all the new stable platform type bikes (Epic FSR, Blur, and to a lesser extent bikes with the mani SPV) are really going to step up to the plate this year. It looks to me like a taste of things to come.

The only bike i know of with the SPV is the VT are there any others?

VT is the only one I know of with the Swinger. Thats why I say to a lesser extent. I would think that some other companies with manitou loyalties would begin to use it as it appears to be a fairly effective system. Though I'll be first to grant, its definately the least effective of the 3 I mentioned.

Edit: begin to use, not being

Are u heavy (the implications are obvious) or dumb... disc brakes on a hardtail? More weight, and not dual travel?

My bike weighs about 4oz more with discs, which was worth the control of discs. Why would anyone NOT want to embrace a new (better) technology. If it were up to idiots like you and your self imposed "rules" everyone would be riding full rigids, because "Whats the point of front suspension without the rear, it just adds weight." Btw, Bianchi makes a badass rigid single speed with...you guessed it...disc brakes.

I guess i didn't read the rules of hardtail accessorizing before i upgraded. Next time i will be sure to ask your opinion about an upgrade. hey but in the mean time here is a tip for extra weight savings take off your seat and let it just slide in on those rocky decents it save almost 3/4lb. and it feels great.

hmmm, did he say it was a race bike? no, he said it was the best XC bike for under $1600 (in his opinion). who cares what you consider a race bike. as long as he rides it and is in a race, thats his race bike right there. its not like its a 37lb freeride rig. hell id race on it.

sorry, i couldnt let it go

Maybe I misread what you were trying to say, but.....

What kind of rock have you been living under? Nearly all hardtails tthat cost six or seven hundred dollars from the big manufacturers come standard with discs. I'm currently running XTR V's and levers, but installed them back before discs really became hugely popular as they are now. My friend is running Avids. If I was to upgrade my braking system again (My XTR's were upgrades), I would go for discs without a second thought. Most nice discs today will not kill you in terms of weight over a set of V's. Have you ever ridden with a quality set of discs? The stopping power is unbelieveable - worth a little extra weight to me - and not everyone can afford a quality FS.
