There are a couple upcoming rides that I would love to take my Trek 7.3FX on, but it is fitted with slicks, and the rides are on crushed rock paths that cross gravel roads. So my question is.. should I switch the tires?

I took it on a ~10 mile crushed rock path ride with no problems, but I'm wondering if that was foolhardy?

Both rides will be about 45 miles.

Opinons?

I wouldn't worry about it. A skinny tire may have problems, like a road bike tire, but if it is not skinny, youshould be fine

My Trek520 still has the slicks she came with ... and they're only 32mm wide. I regularly ride her on crushed gravel, sandy and muddy tracks without a problem. Sure, wider tyres would be better, but they work well, often cruising at 30km/hr on one of those tracks.

Thanks for the input! Yeah, these are 32mm wide and so far I love them. I've heard others say the bike will change drastically speed-wise with 25mm tires, but I think I'll stick with 32 for a long time.

I'll be doing both rides. Going to do the 45 miles this weekend, and about 44 next weekend. Next weekend is the "Bohemian Alps" ride :).

You'll be fine. Tread is for gripping dirt, not gravel.
FWIW I've taken my road bike w/ 700x23 tires on gravel roads at pretty good speeds and done fine. Use a car tire rut (if dry, center if not) and a loose grip.
