What's with the "Velo-" prefix?

I know my history, and I know the velocipede was the precursor to ye olde big-wheel bicycles of days gone by. However, haven't velocipedes been completely and totally obsoleted for all intents and purposes? Why does it remain a popular prefix for all things cycling related?

I see. Well, that would make sense if sites like velonews, veloroutes etc were all en francias, now, wouldn't it? :lol:

i was thinking of changing my AIM handle to something that includes velo, but can't think of anything. i want to change it, but all i can think of (sans "velo") is 3MTA3 & it can't be accpeted because AOL won't allow anything with a number as the first character. ok, this has nothing to do with the original post so i will go somewhere else.

seems that velo'ci means swiftness and that's where it came from. no idea what language. latin?
