"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Sunglasses are overrated anyway.

Recursive and Frunkin on the line at the Neenah Wheel&Sprocket crit. Neither of us knew the other was there.

But we both knew that sunglasses were unnecessary.

I didn't wear sunglasses all last year. I bought some for this year, but I save them for when it's ultra-bright.

Every time it gets to a point in the season where I feel like wearing sunglasses all the time is pointless, a pebble or some other type of road debris shoots up into the lens. Mostly for protection, as far as I'm concerned.

Only time I haven't worn them is when it's raining too hard to see through them, or when I've forgotten them.

Yeah, I've been thinking about it. I guess the magic is that they don't store the sweat, because a headband doesn't work for me at all for that reason. It just squeezes out when saturated. I may pick up a headsweat today and give it a shot.

Meh. $12, why not?

I've been using one for three years and I can't ride without one. I think they are better than just a headband as they seem to help with evaporation.

As for sunglasses, I wear them on every ride, but mostly with clear lenses. They have saved my eyes more than once and they help keep my contacts from drying out.

I'm not preaching about safety, I have no problems with people not wearing sunglasses/helmets, etc. if they don't want to. That's on them, but sunglasses aren't overrated. They're not just for the sun.

There are some strong opinions about the subject. I actually brought some to the race, but forgot them in the car.

Or you go to the eye Doc and he tells you that the whites of your eyes are beconing calloused. You knoiw those big, ugly eye booger things that you see on old men's eye? Those are callouses.

I always wear my $30 Performance glasses with interchangeable lenses. I rarely use the tinted lenses, but wear the clear ones to keep those pebbles and bugs out of my eyes.

I was just joking about the glasses thing, I have normal (rx) glasses on, not sunglasses because Rx sunglasses are $$ and i'm not exactly made of money

I got 10th/30.

There was an 8 man break that had a serious lead at the end. I managed to get into the break when it got away, but couldn't maintain the pace, so I drifted back to the chase, and did well in the sprint. If I were to do this race again, I would try to stay more sheltered. I had my nose in the wind a lot trying to stay in the top five positions.

Get one of those headsweats skull cap thingies.....they work well.

Ok, I got one (a Do-Rag Sweat Vac). I raced the first race with it last night, and left it off for the 2nd race. No sweat in eyes in the first race, much sweat in the eyes in the 2nd race.

I wore it on my warm and moderately humid recovery ride today, and had no sweat in my eyes -- not even in my eyebrows. Very nice. I wore my sunglasses the whole time and had no problems.

I'm impressed :)

Do-rags rock! :beer: I've got a "chili pepper" one that my wife teases my about. Like I said, I've worn mine on every ride for the last three years and no sweat in the eyes, even on hot humid/approaching 100 degrees days.

About 10 years ago I was on one of my first road rides and got hit in the eye with what I think was a horsefly on a fast descent.

I like my sunglasses. :D

1) I always wear some kind of glasses during a ride, due to wind, bugs, and the occasional flying pebble.

2) If sweat is a problem, you might like the Halo headbands. They also do a nice job of deflecting the sweat, but aren't as warm as the skull caps.

I have had so many bugs hit me the face that I never leave home without the sunglasses. I also wear contacts and have almost lost a lens on a few occasions from side winds. In the cold weather, the cold air dries out my eyes much faster. So, I need sunglasses year round.
