Southern California - Nice and easy recovery century Saturday

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm in.
Oceanside Century
Saturday, May 12, 7:30 A.M.
105 Miles with 3,020 Feet of Climbing
Rain Cancels
The Weather Man is forecasting 55 - 71 with Clouds then Sun on Saturday so let's go for a bike ride!!
The Route Slip for the Oceanside Century for this coming Saturday is at
http://www.caltriplecrown.com/centuries/OceansideCentury.xls
and printed copies will be available at the start of the ride.
Let me know if you are coming by replying to this e-mail. If there isn't enough interest in this ride, I may cancel it by announcing the cancellation on this e-mail list on Friday.
DON'T FORGET to bring your I.D. with you so you can get through the Guard Gate at Las Pulgas Road in Camp Pendleton.
This route has one official distance of 105 miles. It is an out and back course so it can be cut short if necessary by turning around at the first Water Stop at mile 33 for example turning it into about 66 miles.
Or you name it ... you can turn around whenever you need so come join us whether you want to ride 25, 50, 75, or 100 miles ... or anything in between.
The route sheet reflects the following changes:
- Uses the bike route through San Clemente instead of PCH. This is a good idea since it avoids all of the traffic on PCH.
- First Water Stop is the Carl’s Jr. at the end of town in San Clemente which is a good idea since Carl’s has good Ice, Water and Restrooms.
- The lunch stop is the new(er) McDonalds near the big PX complex just before the main guard gate in Oceanside.
This ride will start at Foodpark in Irvine at Main and MacArthur (TBM
859-G4/28-C3) at 7:30 A.M. sharp so you should arrive by 7:15 A.M. Main and MacArthur is near the intersection of the San Diego Freeway (405) and the Newport (55) Freeway. Take the MacArthur Blvd. exit from the San Diego (405) Freeway and turn North ... Main Street is the first street Northeast of the 405 Freeway. Meet in the Parking Lot behind the Starbucks.
Ride safe,
Chuck Bramwell

If I can get off work, I might be into this.
I'll check to see if I can change a scheduled shoot from Saturday to Sunday...
(I already was thinking of switching dates because of the Bonelli tri on Saturday anyway)
No heat, you say? :D

Come on. It's a fast flat century.
NO heat. It might even be cold along the coast. You know you want to. Beautiful ocean views...

Hmm..
105 miles - one week after the fact.
I'm beginning to wonder whether anyone here actually knows what a recovery ride is.

 That's okay, Dan. Since it's a "flat" century and "junk" miles to the "big boys"...it doesn't count anyway.
With that being said (tongue and cheek), I really would be joining on this century if I wasn't riding Cruisin' - and it wouldn't be a recovery for me but just a great ride I'm sure, as that area is gorgeous! :)

Been off the bike for nearly a week so a flat century sounds good to me! I was thinking about the Cruisin ride but with this it shortens the drive and will allow me to get my century in for the month. Count me in!

I have different levels of recovery rides. The Starbucks is a 1 mile round trip south to Starbucks. The Pier View is a 4 mile round trip north to Pier View Coffee. These are the the base rides only. If my wife is at the beach at the same time I'll add mileage to go watch her.

Yeah, well I have to ride much further to watch your wife, so it doesn't work as a recovery ride for me.

Attached is the ride profile I did in February. This is when I was recovering from my knee injury. This was the first century since being off the bike for three weeks. That's why the low average speed.

It was nice to meet you today. I didn't know if you came until i asked you 30 miles into the ride "are you Nacy?" You were riding very well today keeping up with the front group. Bob Davidson sure is an animal. Sorry I took off but I wanted to do the entire century with only one stop. I didn't stop at the Carl's on the way back either. This is a good century to do that on. Sure cuts down the overall time. Hope to see you again on these OCW saturdays.

It was a good ride the OCW guys put on. This is the first group ride I've done where they really hammered it the whole way through! While I was able to keep up with the front group for up until close to the turnaround, it had really kicked my ass, especially by the time we hit the turnaround point. I put myself in recovery mode and rode relatively conservative until I got back to Carl's Jr. I decided that I definitely didn't have enough food in me after the McDonalds turnaround (I think because I didn't want to eat that kind of food in the first place!) so I ate a burger at Carl's. Some of the other guys waited with me and we rode back at a more reasonable (for me anyway) pace.
It was nice to meet you Jon, its incredible that you were able to do that whole ride with only one stop. I could try for the same myself if I didn't have such a small bladder. Anyway, I'll definitely be looking forward to another ride with you guys.
