There once was a thread entitled " You're Know You're Addicted To Bicycling When..." which died out a month or so ago. In it, there was one entry that went, "You know you're addicted to bicycling when people you know automatically write checks to sponsor your participation in your favorite charity event."
For me, that is no joke.
Ever since the 1980's, I have participated in the American Lung Association's Bicycle Trek Across Maine.
My sponsors were generous in their contributions and many of them would often see me training for the 3-day, 280-mile trek. A few of them joined me. I've participated in this event off and on for 14 years and many of them were more than willing to sponsor me again and again. Time marches on.
But I've been going through some setbacks over the last year. I've been through two rounds of eye surgery. After each time, I was forbidden most strenuous exercises, including bicycling. I've going through one of those recovery periods now. At this point in time, I cannot ride in this year's Trek. Meanwhile, my friends and neighbors have come to me, ready to sponsor me at their usual contributions without my asking them. I didn't accept their money this time around. What polite answer can I possibly tell them? I might want to ride the Trek next year if all goes well. Besides, after adding up all the amounts I was offered, it came to over $300.00! Not all of my sponsors know of my situation.
Any suggestions?
