Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Injuries Sucks

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So last Saturday I walking through the local grocery store and a couple of morons decided to walk through the store with a couple of 2.5 gallon water bottles that they planned to fill with a filtered water dispenser that is at the front of the store. The bottles were leaking leaked and I slipped on some of the water and hyper extend my left knee pretty bad. I have injured that knee in the past and was in real pain. X-rays and MRI later, no damage other than what was there before, but told to not strain it and ..."NO RIDING MY BIKE". The doctor lives near me and sees me on my bike all the time.
So I have not ridden since Saturday and I am really getting antsy to ride and decided to take a short test ride tonight, about 5 miles, just as the doctor and wife were driving by. Needless to say, he doubled back and asked me if I had been drinking. Told him the knee felt better and was just taking a test ride. :D. Since I was in my riding gear, I don't think he believed me. So after a couple of laps around the hood, it felt pretty good, no pain and will try and get in 15 miles tomorrow and more on Saturday. Just hope the wind settles down and while we deperately need rain, just no rain while I am riding and absolutely no smoke from the fires.
Ugh :( Careful with that knee pain - though I find knee pain = less riding. More I ride, less pain (I swing dance which involves a lot of lifting, high impact, torquing, etc...).
Needless to say, he doubled back and asked me if I had been drinking.
LMAO! Those were the first words out of his mouth?

Yea, he is quite the comedian. When I turned 40 and went in for a physical and it was time to ...well, check the back door..., he put on a fake rubber hand that was about 3 times the size of his real hand and asked if I was ready. He is a 55 year old triathlete and really a nice guy.

Sorry to read about the accident. Doctors err on the side of caution generally. He probably doesn't want to take any chance of your re-injuring the knee. Be very careful that you don't bite off more than you can chew, Brian. 15 miles might be too much too soon.

Wish I could find a Doctor like that......mine is female and not into cycling as far as I know. She didn't seem to beleive me that I pedaled over 2500 miles last season. Well, I didn't lose any weight so she must of figured I was fibbing! I was nursing a knee injury over the entire winter and riding season and had gained back the 12 pounds I had lost. This year I am watching my portions better and not rewarding myself with "extra", for riding! We'll see how it goes. :o
Yea, I think I am going to just go 5 to 10 tonight, but I am going to wrap it up to keep it togther. That ought to be fun. :D. This is really putting a crimp in my Century ride training. I was going to try that over the memorial day weekend, but may have do it another time if this doesn't clear it self up soon. I was ready to ride 80 on Saturday, but might be lucky if I get any seat time now. :(
Well after retweaking my knee last week, I visited the doc for a follow up and discovered I might have some damage on my knee in the miniscus (sp). I got a MRI yesterday and while the tech is no doc, he said he did see some issues, but did not see anything he thought would require surgury, heres hoping. I got a cortisone shot yesterday to ease the pain and lay off the motrin and I feel like I could ride 50 miles today, that is some amazing stuff. I go back on Tuesday for the the follow up with the doc, so needless to say, no miles for me this week. 2 weeks in a row, this is really sucking and the weather is absolutely fantastic here today.

Orthopedic advice from doctors is usually based on the assumption that most people want to be told to rest and not engage in activity. if you want to be active, you'll get better care from a sportsmedicine orthopedist -- they work under the assumption that you want to return to activity as fully and quickly as possible.

Yep, and that is what I am seeing. When I start looking for one, I made sure they did sports medicine so I could ping them about riding as soon as possible.

I have had knee issues since I tore my left one up in the fall of 2000, and forever I went to a regular ortho who would always prescribe no movement for a week or two when I had pain. Last year a friend suggested going to a sports ortho who did a much better job of getting me back moving in a shorter period of time.
Here's hoping that when I finally drop all this weight I won't need to worry about this anymore :D
Excellent news, no damage on my knee, just a little soft tissue swelling around the PCL which make since as I hyper-extend my knee. I might have a paramenscial cyst behind the PCL however and he wants to probe that. I have been given full riding authority. Just have to limit first several rides to 60% and under 1 hr. Uh..yea sure doc, what ever you say..

No such luck. Take it from Tiny Tim here. Once you have a joint or structural problem, it's there forever. But putting less weight on it is a good idea.
Slight set back today. Doc advised that the cyst I have is attached to the PCL and is large enough to cause the doc some concern. From what I understand, these type of things can mutate and cause major problems down the road. He said is look benign, but will know more once it is removed. I will be going in for a pre-op exam on Wednesday, hopefully to get it removed on Friday via scope and back up and riding by June 15th. Until then, I can ride and will get some miles in as long as the weather cooperates.
