Training & Nutrition - lightheaded?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have been building up mileage (distance) over the last month or so, hoping to complete my first century of the season.
I am now doing rides of 50 miles + but I am having this strong feeling of lightheadedness beyond the 40miles range. Yesterday I felt so dizzy I had to stop and get off the bike for a while, even then the feeling persisted for the rest of the ride.
I ended up doing my longest ride of the year (70 miles).
But even after the ride this time. At home and rested when after sitting or in a prone position, when I stood up the lighted headed and dizziness returned.
I know your saying that I should be telling this to a doc.... but. Maybe it is a cycling related thing.
You get free health care in England, I'd see the doc. I just posted a question about headaches during a hot ride and it is probably hydration related, but this sounds different.

are you drinking and eating along the ride?
you have to eat before you are hungry and drink before you are thirsty. if you arn't eating it could be because your bloodsugar crashed. if you are. i'd see a doctor
I agree with everyone here, especially Ritalin... try eating more and drinking more during your ride. It sounds like you were in a serious bonk. BUT... to be on the safe side, it's always better to get to a doctor to test for insulin imbalances or other problems you may not be aware of.

I think this is more than dehydration. Go see your doc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks People.......
Have made an appointment with the doc for tomorrow, as the light headed feeling is persisting.
Sat, when I did the 70 miler was the warmest day so far this year and maybe I did not drink enough to compensate, but I am kinda concerned that the affects are`nt receding a lot.
I shall see.... I am also losing to much weight for comfort, my normal basic weight is appro 145 lbs. I checked myself on the scales before the ride and I was 141lb before starting the ride, on return I was down to 137 lbs which seems an exesive loss for a 70 mile cycle ride,
See the GP, but it may be that you were dehydrated.
I had the same thing about a month ago, and the doc said I hadn't hydrated enough. Nothing else found after blood tests.

I think if you lost that much weight, you are not hydrating enough. Also, light headedness is a sign of low blood pressure. When i exercise, my blood pressure drops significantly.
Go see the doc, but drink at least a quart an hour.
Check in at the doc`s this morning.
Quite a sporting and Keep fit guy himself, so was really understanding......
He declared me perfectly well after examination, My b.p. was registering normal, when it had been on the low side on two previous visits.
No sign of any diabetes which I always get a little paraniod about, having a family history of this complaint.
Listening to my general diet layout he believed this could be my problem area, Maybe I was going into calorie deficiency on longer runs, as to many fish salads weren't supplying enough energy suppliment and this was also causing the longer term affects.
He suggested I try to eat more carbohydrade foods (Pasta or rice), give this a try for a while and maybe cut down on the duration of rides also for a time.
I will give him and every one else's kind advice a go, to hopefully clear my problem.
Regards Willi`c
keep us posted on further developments willic

You might want to do your 50+ miles right before you go to the doc. Maybe find a route that will get you there that is 50+ miles??
This way the doc can check you out when you are in the state that you describe. I'm betting your doing some type of blood sugar thing.
Just a thought!!

Chewa,
Is that a Vizsla in that picture?!! I have a weim, he's my best buddy :)
GO SEE A DOCTOR! I did after many stubborn months and found out that my insulin levels were low. Good thing I did, the doc said I would've been in some serious trouble if not. Now I eat 6 meals a day and feel fine most of the time.
:)
