I'm looking for a new fixie around $600. Right now I'm riding a 70s Peugeot conversion, but it needs a new crankset, new wheels, and a new stem (the original one is really awesome looking but its pointy and my inner thighs aren't thanking me for it when I lean forward to skid). I like it a lot, but its got a couple of dents in the frame and I don't think its worth it to put a lot of money what needs to be done and the problems with the frame.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Right now I'm looking at the Bianchi Pista, Schwinn Madison, IRO, etc... I would love to build my own up but I don't trust myself to stay within a budget, and I need to because, you know, starving college student and all. I already made that mistake when I spend my life savings on my Santa Cruz mountain bike. But anyways, I would really appreciate any input that more experienced and knowledgeable riders have to give. Thanks!

-Ryan

Here, let me help you out: http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=225713

There are only about 9 million complete bikes out there for $600. I'd give you my opinion here, but I linked you to 11 pages of identical discussion elsewhere.

I just saw the Surly Steamroller Complete at my local bicycle shop (Webcyclery).

Front brake, SuginoRD crank, nice Alex wheels with Surly hubs...

Everything except pedals for $600.

An attractive burgundy paint job.

Nice all around.

I'd like to get one for a family member; get her started riding fixed.

I rode my Bianchi Pista 5000 miles before replacing the head set, and I weigh 235 all up.

The Surly Steamroller has better components and will go the distance.

$600.

langster is a road bike with track ends, but it's still pretty nice. I checked it out before deciding on the Felt. My only gripe about it is the 71 mm bottom bracket drop, which is about as low as most road bikes.

Yep, as a few others have said....WRONG! I have a $500 bicycle and have put 7000 miles of city riding on it and haven't had to replace anything but tires and my chain. Finally got around to pulling the wheels off to true them...and I turned around 3 nipples a half turn each. Yep, machine-built wheels can and do hold up just fine.

Please stop perpetuating this idea around the forum that unless you get an $800 frame, $300 crank arms and top-flight stuff your bike it going to explode. A little tenderness while riding and some attention to upkeep (chain cleaning, lubing, etc.) will keep an inexpensive, stock bicycle running for a long time.

Too many people just keep this myth going to allow themselves to feel okay when they spend their rent money on a bike they can't afford or when they have a full NJS whip and yet they don't ride more than 15 miles a week, can't track stand, can't skid and generally are more interested in having a machine that conveys something to others rather than having a machine that suits their needs.

KHS Bicycles.com I rode a KHS road bike years ago, KHS is a serious but not expensive bike. More popular on the West Coast, places have the kids and rec. bikes back East. Stores do have them on-line. I've read posts here at the forum by owners who have them, along with the Jamis and Bianchi, etc.

Ive owned an IRO Mark V, a handful of conversions, and now a stock 07 Bianchi Pista and I couldnt be happier so far. While I enjoyed my other bikes especially the Mark V, something just didnt feel right about the ride in all of them. I finally went to my LBS and got measured out for a Pista and its the match Ive been looking for since I started riding. The gear ratio, the frame geometry, the aesthetics were all spot on for what I was looking for in a bike. The price tag came out to $580 after taxes and I get some relief that Im not locking up $1000+ machine to a pole in the city everyday.

Go used. I got my Langster Pro for around $475 and my Surly Cross-Check with lots of extras for $500. Practically stole them off of Ebay. Just keep a close eye on a bunch of bikes for a few weeks. You'll find something great for cheap.
