Does anyone have any tales of pant legs getting caught between the chain and chainring on a fixie?
The idea of it slightly worries me, but I'm not sure if it would be more likely to end up in a gnarly faceplant or just a rip in your pants as you keep cranking along.

There was a thread a while back about it... Basically a lot of us have stores of our pants being pulled down by our bikes. Always seems to happen in an intersection too for some reason.

Velo Orange is selling a pretty slick NOS chainguard if you are all that worried.

Not really a disaster, but over the winter I rode in sweatpants and had 3 big holes torn out from the chainring.

most likely, it'll rip yo' pants, or tug 'em off.
roll 'em up, wear manpris or shants, or do what i do and ride naked. mmmm.

Lolling hard at pants being pulled down! That'll teach you hipsters for wearing girls pants and not pulling them up properly. j/k
Nekkid riding FTW!

My jeans got caught and ripped up past mid thigh. I just kept riding, once they were able to get free of the chainring, i tucked the leg in my back pocket.

funny you mention. i was headed home from an alleycat in sacramento.. pouring rain. didn't wreck during, but as i was three blocks from home, my wet pant leg unravelled. just got it fixed today.
but it was lucky to wear my helmet.. hit my head and effed up my hand.
my pants never seem to get pulled down at intersections
its usually dark alleys :(

I got a pair of dickies caught once. Rolled up but not far enough. It tugged really hard and then i had a giant square (about 4 x 4") missing. Also one time I was on a the patio in front of my library trying to learn backwards circles, I was gettin it down pretty good when my shoe lace came untied and wrapped around the pedal. I lost my balance from the circles put my left foot down and was then left off-balance, hopping on one foot with the right strapped tightly to the bike until moments later when I took a 0mph fall in front of a bunch of people. Ya...Im that cool.
it whipped me down onto my seat and then ripped my carhartts. so sad.

Wouldn't loose and baggy guy's pants be more likely to be snagged on the chainring than tight girl's pants? That's been my experience.
dont try to rationalize cross dressing pal

Last week I was wearing dress pants(coming home from work) and it started pouring. I guess the wieght of the rain rolled my pant leg down without me knowing it. Took less than a second for half the pant leg to get ripped off, no crash, no big deal, just down 1 pair of pants. I was going uphill(slow) though. I always thought it would be uglier, still I'll be more careful in the future.

Carhartts into the chain * Foot rolled over and still strapped to pedal * Torn tendon on the front of foot * bike skidding * Hellla slow-mo fall into roadside grass * Pretty girl on Vintage Italian steel rides by and laughs at me * Limp the 2 blocks back home
Pulled my pant leg in, tore it from cuff all the way to the crotch as I fell on my ass (laughing the whole time, was playing around while visiting my parents).
Happened once on my tallbike, that was a different story, took a 6 foot fall :)

Ouch. That's about all the encouragement I need to stay vigilant with rolling up my drivetrain pants. Tearing a tendon ain't gonna tickle.
I'm way careful not to let it happen on my fixed gear, but pretty casual about it on geared bikes. Lots of my pants have little holes in them. Nearly all my pants have chainring marks.

On the way home from work last week. Had the crotch of my BDU's catch the nose of my saddle. Had a well ventilated crotch for the next 2 miles. Oh the joys.

At an alleycat once I was cranking up a hill just after the race started and let a little fart. Then I got really scared because it had that wet-hot feeling. Worried I had made a mistake, I rode as fast as I could to finish and get to the bathroom and won. My pants were fine though, luckily.

I was wearing a really sweet pair of pants on a hungover early morning ride to get some water. I totally destroyed the right leg and had to make them into shants. Damn carelessness.

i don't wear baggies so i don't have this problem but, one of my pairs has a hole near the crotch and the saddle sometimes slips in and gets stuck. It has caused me to almost crash a couple times.

Nice!
why do you think I have a couple pairs of shants I had to do something to salvage my pants the pretty much end up ripping to shreds
All my shants began their career as destroyed pants.

automatic trimming of excess shoelace happened a while back, now I just need to switch to LSD to complete the process.
losers... a kilt is the only way to go !
I have yet to have any disasters while wearing my fixed-gear pants.

I see nothing wrong with a loose ankle.

one time, i ripped the inside, and it just split all the way up to the groin while i was riding. in public.
second, i actually had a pant leg rolled up. i was going uphill, sprinting, and it caught. i nutted myself on the stem which left a nasty bruise on the pubic bone, twisted my ankle, and gave my brand new jeans a nice L- shaped tear on the inside. i have to resew it every couple months.
i just roll it up and keep it up. sometimes people ask me why i have one pant leg rolled up. they end up doing the same thing for no reason at all a day later, prancing around in public getting stared at. i guess its the new fashion trend? who knows. but roll it up, or wear shorts.

I have mostly shoelace disasters, I don't wear pants loose or long enough to mess me up that way.
