good god, almost every big name is out of the giro, how lame, the big names are getting to old to be messing with the 2 year bans anymore.

The top 3 contenders are all previous winners?, just no basso and hamilton. Hamilton i will not miss but i was looking forward to basso destroying.
what are you on about? Salvodelli, Cunego, Simoni are all in. The only one missing is birillo.

The under 25 race should be HOT...
Here is a short list:
Bettini
Simoni
Cunego
Savoldelli
Garzelli
Popovych
Di Luca
Rebellin
McEwen
Haedo
Petacchi
A very short list as well....there are many more to watch....McEwen will try to really hit it hard....we get to see Haedo in his first big tour....CSC in the sprints...wooohooo you get to find out what Mayo is going to do.....if he does well he "might" not help Simoni so much....
There is lots of racing to watch...good racing as well....

I cant wait to see how JJ does
please, cunego and simoni have been lack luster to say the least in the last two giro's. Sure, Cunego has been ill prior, but its not the same in feel. I guess I'm still getting over the fact that Lion King is no longer around. The giro has always been my fav, but Im not feeling it this year.

The other day, a coworker and I were joking that we were going to sign up for the Grand Tours since OP seems on the verge of busting a lot of people...I love my job...arriving in the morning to hear a coworker say "oh, I feel really awful today" and thinking they have been through some tragic event....only to find out they read the news about Basso...lol.
I have wondered for awhile if Mayo is clean. He obviously has talent, but he is on one day then off the next.

You would have thought they'd have tested Vinokourov for LSD after the way he attacked his own team mates @ the Tour de France a couple of years ago. That's when I knew he was my favorite non-American bike racer. The dude is just whacked.
And the way his teammate attacked him. He is exciting. How about a GC contender winning the final "sprinters" stage. Yowsa

you could stick cat5 pack fodder on stage 15 or 17 and the racing would still be awsome to see the pain

Yeah, Simoni finished third last year and second the year before, and Cunego finished fourth last year. Both Simoni and Cunego finished ahead of the defending champion, Savoldelli, last year.
Simoni's finished no worse than third in 7 of the last 8 Giro's.
In '05 Cunego finished 18th and rode a three week race with mononucleosis. He was still a half an hour faster than Basso, who also was sick.
Those are pretty lackluster results.
I love it when the casual bike fans come out in the summer....shaking my head....

All I know is that someone needs to beat Simioni. Anybody.

All I know is that someone needs to beat Simioni. Anybody.
Why? Because he called out Basso, calling his performance last year unbelievable.
Looks like he was right.

Wow...this is hilarious.
Don't watch. You wouldn't know what you were looking at anyway.

I just wish Simoni would be a little more quiet in defeat. Even if he was beaten unfairly it just comes off weak crying about it.
maybe its just the medias fault.

Thank you.
I was talking about his racing style in general.
I don't care if Simoni was top 5, he is still lacking what he had. He is not the power house in the hills anymore - in terms of sticking with the big guns. He got canned on a whole bunch of stages in last two years - yeah, he blames it on the team - got a love it.

Meh...he comes off as a whiner.
I'm rooting for, as always, Cunego. I expect this to be an exciting race, as the Giro usually is. God I love this sport, even with all of its doping problems.

agreed 100% w/what he said re: Basso.

You agree that Simoni came off like a whiner, or you agree with what he said when he said Basso looked "superhuman"? If I recall correctly, he was complaining because he said he and Basso had an agreement that Simoni wouldn't drop him on a descent if Basso didn't drop Simoni on the next climb. Basso reneged (depending on who you believe), and then Simoni complained and made his assertion. In that context, it does sound like whining.
Whatever. I just hope we don't hear of any positives in regards to this Giro.

+1, Cunego is a fav. of mine also. His performance in the TdF last year, throwing down a great ITT (his reputed weakest discipline) to keep himself in the best young rider jersey says to me that he's one to watch as a future stage race star.

So, lets' examine this expert commentary...
In last year's Giro, there were six major climbing stages, most taking place in the last week...
Stage 13: Simoni finishes 4th, Piepoli (his team mate which I am certain you knew  ) won the stage. This is sort of like the Heras to Armstrong relationship (since you seem to be pretty new to the sport, I figured you'd know something about Lance).
Stage 16: Simoni finishes second, Piepoli finishes third right with him
Stage 17: Simoni finishes 8th, Piepoli wins the stage
Stage 18: Pack finish stting up the Queen Stage...
Stage 19: Simoni finished 7th along with Basso, same time
Stage 20: Simoni finishes 2nd
Oh, and he was not top five...it's top 3 in 7 of the last 8 Giro's, of which he won 2.
He lost to a rider who, we now know, was doped.
Criticise all you want, but at least have a bit of knowledge about which you speak.

True...but, at least in the racing part we can try to educate a bit...
BTW...welcome to the Daily Peloton. Behave...:D
For the record, I don't think Simoni's got it this year. He has not raced enough and I read his comments after the TTT today and I gather he was hurting pretty badly. He even went on to say if Ricco's stronger, he's got the ball.
A lot of carnage today.

if we're talking about road bike racing, then it's more like 50% of the posters. ;)

Isn't 97.5% the result of the 1933 German election? Majority rules.:p

I already saw the final results. Savoldelli wins by 2:04 over DiLuca and Popo.
