Mountain Biking - While Waiting for the Bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Once I'd made my mind up to bike again, I thought it would be easy. Nothing would stand in the way, not even my firearm collection. Having sold and unsold a couple specimens since then, trying to raise the cash, I now know there is a longer road ahead. I am waiting for the Bike.
What does one do Waiting for the Bike?
Well, get back into the old one. This is a Jamis Dakar comp series from the very early days, Prestige tubing, Deore XT, and no suspension. Back when the three main gears teeth count were 48, 38 and 28. I had to special order a smaller inner ring in the late 80's. Special order what everyone takes for granted now.
So I've been riding the trails in the hills- literally, cow trails, and getting into shape.

I bet your tail has had better days, eh?

Pics?
Geeze Danka, you'd really want to see an old Jamis Dakar? Yep, you would. You've got this thing in your blood, I can tell from your posts. When I get my dig camcorder going we'll see, but I've been told my computer doesn't have the memory or speed to process digital movies, or stills from them.
It's red. Pretty light at around 28 pounds. The tubing, like a track bike, you know? Not oversize at all. There's a lot of flex there. I don't remember what they're called anymore, or if you guys use them today, but the seat post has the spring on it for lowering and raising quick.
It's classic, elegant. It's purty too. No one in my rural Montana has any idea that it isn't just another bike to park in front of the General Store. And you know, in value, that's all it is today- another non descript bike. But it has taken me so many miles. It's my friend. Do you own any tools that make you smile when you see them?
The rear derailer broke a couple weeks ago, well, it served it's time. So I got a used LX (?) Shimano. The older XT parts grumbled a little but they couldn't complain too much as it is allegedly more 'advanced.' To tell the truth, though, the old Deore XT must have matched the other components better because shifting isn't as smooth or positive with the outside gears in the rear.
No, it isn't in any danger of losing it's right to be stabled, not until it ever passes away....I'm thinking I got it in 86 or 87, and the bike is still sound.
Dil; the rocks hurt more today than 10 years ago. I didn't notice them much when I was in my 30's.

You're new derailleur probably just needs some fine tuning.
If you go under the Bicycle Mechanics thread, there are some Barnett's Manuals you can download and adjust the thing. In addition, park tools has a step by step with pictures on maintenance at their site www.parktool.com
Good luck!
BTW, when you do get your new bike, turn this one into a single speed! It'll be lighter, and will make you stronger!
OLD BIKES NEVER DIE, THEY JUST GET CONVERTED!
