General Cycling Discussion - A question for the Aussies - Insurance?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi there,

I have done a search of the site, and haven't been able to find any great detail on insuring bikes over here in Australia. I would love to know from the Aussies out there:

1. Do you insure your bike?

2. If so, though whom?

3. How much?

I am in the process of saving for my first "decent" road bike, and my darling wife is terrified that I will loose / destroy / have my new ride stolen unless it is insured. I am looking at a $4500 package (bike, accessories, clothing, cycle computer/HRM) so it does make sense to insure it. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance........

I already have third-party insurance through my membership of Bicycle Queensland. I'm actually looking at getting some insurance for my bike myself, having recently had one stolen. I have heard that some policies will only cover your bike if it's stolen from home, so I'm being a little hesitant at the moment (that, and the fact that I'm a notorious procrastinator).

Chris,

I will be looking at joining a club or Bicycle NSW soonish (the third party is a great idea - I would certainly cause some damage if I hit someone at speed - a little bigger than the average bear!) As for the other insurance, let me know how you go if you manage to get enthused about it at all. I found one through the Bicycle NSW guys and Safeguard Bicycle insurance, quoting:

Sum insured:
Up to $2000 - $200
Up to $4000 - $381
Up to $5000 - $472

Now that I might look into.

Hey there

Our two bikes are insured as part of the home policy. It worked out at a few hundred dollars on top of the premium but it includes coverage anywhere in Australia. I can provide more details if you require...

AdrianB,

Thanks for the reply - I checked into our home insurance policy and found that they only insure for it when it is actually in the house - not when you are out and about. I did manage to find another link that seems more promising:

Cycle Cover Insurance (www.cyclecover.com.au)

For my bike, I would be looking at around $232.50 annually - much better than $381 through the other crowd.

I reckon at the moment, between this and the third party I will be covered for with a Bicycle NSW membership, I should be sorted. I don't mind paying a little for a lot of peace of mind.
