Touring - Rack mounting problems... Dropouts too narrow?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey all.

I also posted this on the commuting and mechanics forum.

I recently ordered a Tubus Cargo rack from Wayne at the touring store to commute with and do some light touring on my single speed. When I went to mount it, I noticed a problem. It seems that the rack is made for a bike with much wider dropouts. The space between the two lower attachment points is, if I measured it right, about 160mm (seems really wide to me...). My dropouts are 122mm apart.

Now, tubus provides some spacers to fix an issue like this, but even with the spacers I still have a significant distance between the rack and the eyelets (a centimeter or so?). I think I can get some more spacers in there to fill the space, but this would require a longer screw for attachment.

Would a longer screw be able to hold up to touring? It seems that the longer the screw, the more likely it is to snap under load.

Any other ideas? Thanks

Nick

Most road bikes these days are 130mm spacing between rear dropouts, mtb are 135, tandems are 145-160, and older bikes are 120 or 126mm. No rack could possibly fit all these bikes. Racks (including alum) and the fork on a bob yak can/must be bent slightly in order to fit your bike properly.
