It's 9:00 -- my children PROMISED me a bike ride for mother's day, and I'm still waiting for them to get up!!
But I'm just being facetious. They really are the most remarkable people to ever have graced this planet. I feel privileged to have had a part in that.

Mother's Day Ride Report:
Perfect, and I mean PERFECT California weather -- the kind that got us the reputation -- lovely, sunny, not too hot, not too cool, light breeze. A nice jaunt from Arcadia to Cal Tech in Pasadena and back again. Actually, "nice" is not the right word -- hair-graying, heart-stopping, death-inviting, more like it.
"Please stay on the RIGHT side of the road."
"Please give those parked cars more clearance. If one of them should open a door . . . ."
"Mommy, just because YOU got hurt doesn't mean anything bad is going to happen to us!!"
"Honey, please stay on the RIGHT side of the road."
"But I'm turning left!"
"Then, please use the left hand turn lane, not the left side of the road."
"It's safer to ride on the road like a car than on the sidewalk."
"But then, I'd have to ACT like a car!!"
"Rolling!"
"Water!"
"Car up!"
"Mommy, why are you pointing out those things? We can SEE them!!"
"Because it's etiquette to point out hazards to the people behind you."
"Oak tree!"
"Cloud!"
"House!"
"Dry leaf!"
"Malicious, ungrateful, disrepectful children!"
We had a lovely, lovely, lovely time. Though my older boy could not see why he, as a cyclist, needed to obey the rules of the road like a car when he wasn't a car. "I'm on a bike. I don't WANT to ride like a vehicle. Then, I can't go all over the road when I want to."
"It's safer."
"How? There's no cars here. The street's blocked off."
"I don't have to ride my bike like a car, because I'm not a car. I'm riding a BIKE!!"
Ugh. No wonder I have to spend so much money at the salon for my colorist.
I had the best time, ever, though. My daughter at one point said, "Let's race," so I tucked down into the drops and hammered. And every time I glanced left, she was right there (on her comfort bike, blue jeans, and flat pedals) on my elbow. I desperately wanted to shift up to a higher gear, but I had such a good cadence going, I didn't DARE shift, lest I lose that cadence and lose speed in the gear change. I'm not used to road racing, only racing the track, so I don't know how to change gears in a hard sprint. So, I did what I always do on the track, and just pedaled faster, and finally started to leave her behind.
Blech. That was one HARD sprint. I don't think I've sprinted that hard in any race or training class I've been in for the last MONTH!! Man! I wish she'd come and train with me at the track. She'd really kick my butt into shape. "Mommy, you had an unfair advantage!! If I had those same little pedals as you, I'd have BEAT you!"
Anyway, a little while later, my older boy and daughter started doing what kids always do -- challenging each other to race -- and I was a little bit behind them, so I hit it hard and blasted past them, and smoked 'em. Again, a harder sprint than I've ever done in any race. Took me a long time to recover. Naturally, THEY weren't even racing, so were TOTALLY unimpressed with my prowess.
I had a BLAST!!
