Touring - Logistics, Getting People and Bikes to Astoria

We are making kind of a last minute change. With only a couple weeks to go, our trip originally planned to an E to W transamerica is now going to be a W to E transamerica if we can figure out the logistics. Does anyone have suggestions of how to best get us and our bikes to Astoria?

I imagine we would fly to Portland and take a bus to Astoria or possibly rent a car. I think it would be easier if the bikes were shipped directly to Astoria. The problem is where in Astoria. Can any one recommend a person, business, or bike shop in Astoria that would be willing to receive the three bikes and hold them for us for a reasonable fee?

Have you looked into shipping via FedEX or UPS etc? You can probably ship to a depot in Astoria and then pick the bikes up there. You could also look into Greyhound parcel but that may take a long time. I am using Greyhound to deliver me and the bike to my starting point this summer. I will probably have to send the bike at least several days ahead.

Not yet. This is really a last minute change and we are scrambling to see if it works for us.

I flew to Portland with my bike, rented a one-way uhaul (reserved in advance, 3 miles from airport), threw bikes & luggage in the uhaul, drove to Astoria, returned the Uhaul the next morning. With 2 people, it was very cost effective (cheaper & faster than the bus, cheaper than a one-way rental car) and the more people the cheaper it would be.

I arrived a few hours earlier in the airport than my tour partner, so I just put my bike together, put the luggage on it, and rode to the uhaul place. If you didn't want to do that, it would be a quick cheap cab ride.

My partner had his bike shipped to a hotel where we stayed the first night. They had lots of other bike boxes too. Sorry, can't remember the name.

If I was to do it again, I would just ride to Astoria from Portland, esp. if doing a transam, since you wouldn't be repeating any roads. I used Hwy 30 along the columbia river on the way out of Astoria (on the lewis & clark), and it was just fine. there's a campground/rv park about 30 miles from portland. the portland airport, and portland in general, is quite bike-friendly.

How about leaving from Portland and skipping Astoria. Is there a good route to Tillamook or somewhere else that would allow us to see at least a bit of the coast if we start from Portland, while not adding too many miles or maybe cutting a few compared to starting in Astoria?

At the risk of duplication:

Amtrak Bus leaves Portland Union Station downtown at 6:00 p.m.
Gets into Astoria at 8:30 p.m.

There are two bike listings at Yahoo Yellow pages.
A number of years ago I used Hauer's - but is says locksmith now.
They were very good.
There's also another bike shop.

I agree - with the airline bike charge -
It is MUCH easier sending your bike ahead.
Then you don't have to schlep all kinds of stuff
from airport to bus terminal and in between.

Just make sure there is plenty of time - like 3 or 4 days.
UPS has guaranteed delivery dates business to business.
(For some reason it is MUCH cheaper shipping business to business, too.)
