Its akin to building a better mouse trap, but has anyone made a type of lock for a bike recently which could have a more secure design than the common armored chain lock, chain lock with hardened links, or a U lock?

saddle rigged to explode or plunge hardened steel pins into the buttocks? might add a bit too much weight and would hate for it to misfire on me, but worth the risk.

no, I just use the "make it as annoying as possible to steal" method.
This means leaving the bike in top gear, lock the front wheel to the frame, and the back wheel through the rear triangle onto the post, then run a cable through the bottle cage/saddle.

How bout a cable that sounds an alarm if it becomes detached (i.e. the cable runs a current in a loop--if the loop is broken, siren goes off)
or just grow really tall, so that no one in their right mind would want your bike

Leave the pet cobra in your handle bar bag. It may not keep your bike from being stolen, but all you will have to do to find it is follow the screams.

There's a famous one legged bike messenger in NYC (damn, can't remember his name) who rides a fixie. Since he only has the left leg he's had to reverse the drive train and took the other crank off. Someone stole it, he found the guy selling it down the street and argued with him that it was his.
So yeah, they do but probably less often.
