Anyone in? Nice ride on rolling hills, wonderfully supported by super nice folks! Hope BF'ers can come out for it.

CM, do most people do the metric ride? How's the traffic on the route? How many total riders do you think?

CycleMagic
05-15-07, 08:15 AM
FU....you had better be there or I'll have to hurtcha! :D

Karen: It is a great ride, hope you can make it! It may be fun to ride in familiar territory again. Do you miss the Conover area? Quite a change from the big city (you are in the Raleigh area now, right?).

BikeWNC: I'm not sure how the field breaks out, there are quite a few people that do the metric. I'm planning on it. Depending on the weather (seems to have been rainy the past couple of years), there is a pretty big showing (~200-ish).

It would be a good ride for me after Mitchell on the 11th, but I have some logistics issues. My wife is working that day, the ride starts at 8am and it is a 2:15 drive. That would mean I would need to leave the house at 5am. Grandma, the sitter, gets up early but that may be asking too much. So right now it doesn't look good for me making the ride.

I don't blame you, BWNC. 5am is precious sleeping time, I totally understand! More power to you for riding Mitchell! How many years have you ridden it? (hijacking my own thread...)

This will be my 4th in a row. It may be my last for a bit. I've said that before, but this year I'm saying it before the ride. I think I'm ready to try some other rides and there are so many good ones around our area.

CycleMagic

not an easy ride, I hear. Well, here's to making this year's your most enjoyable one yet.

Thanks. I'll do my best, now if the weather would cooperate that would help.

I grew up right down the road from murray's mill. I'd love to do that ride, but new to the sport. I may look into it next year.

CycleMagic
05-15-07, 06:30 PM
oh, don't be shy, msharpe! the 15 and 30 mile loops are very very beginner cyclist friendly. the best part is that they will feed you during and after the ride! It is a great way to push yourself further than you expect to be able to go, especially if you take advantage of the rest stops along the way. Give it a try!

msharpe - You in Cornelius? Come on lots of rides up here and great routes. Shears Road ...gateway to great rides!!!

I may see if the wife want's to do the ride. We haven't done any group rides yet, so we may want to try that first.

PAlt, I'll have to get a few routes from some of the locals. So far our route has been from West Catawba to 115(sometimes towards mooresville, sometimes towards huntersville). We did manage to make it out past the lazy 5 ranch on 150(those are some crazy hills for a beginner)

Nothing to be pensive about. It's not a race, just a ride in the country. Put the pocket protector and slide rule away, turn off your brain and just ride. :p You can do it.

yeah, Vega, what HE said! just come out, have some fun and see some Catawba County countryside!

I see you had to tilt the camera in the second pic to make it appear there is an incline. :)

CycleMagic

silly. maybe I did..I was rolling at the time. Trust me, there are some long pulls on this route, not at all a flat course. VERY do-able, but with a few rollers in there for good measure.

We did the 30 mile route today. Today was my third day in a row riding and I was a bit tired to day. Think I need a rest day or two now!

i know! yikes! Funny thing is, we saw the snake AFTER going down to the stream and back up to the bridge. He was quite beautiful, from afar.

IMHO to long and thin to be venomous. Probably a harmless corn snake. The color and markings do resemble a copperhead though...

It's obviously a very wild place that Catawba County. We already know that CM is wild, what more proof do we need? Snakes?

CycleMagic

that's a relief, COR. I thought it was quite beautiful. The picture does not do it justice.

Poisonous or not, any snake that maketh me soil my pants is a baaaad snake.

Think I'll just stick to my usual snake-free routes. Yeah, there are dogs, but we have an "understanding."

Just got back from the doc.. I have strep.. I should be good to go tho by next weekend.

On another note, does anyone have an actual cue sheet for this ride? I looked on their website and all I saw was a badly drawn map.

BikeWNC
06-07-07, 04:27 PM
Oh good. Someone else to pull me around for the day. :)

Formula Ugh
06-07-07, 04:42 PM
JayC... the course is marked very well... just follow the big white MM markings. There are about 3 or 4 rides that overlap on some of those roads, so just think "MM"!

CycleMagic
06-07-07, 10:01 PM
FU is right! Don't get confused by the other markings. ALWAYS follow the "mm" on the roadway. You won't get lost. It is well marked, but there are other routes that intersect with that one.

JayC
06-07-07, 11:24 PM
Well, I wanted to plot the route into my Garmin so without having the route ahead of time, I cant really do that. I emailed the ride organizers and asked for a cue sheet and didnt get a response.

CycleMagic
06-08-07, 09:51 AM
Jay,
this is the response I just got:

Unfortunately, we do not have our "new route" on line yet. It was suppose to have been done already but we ran into a snag or two. We will have the new route maps available at the start of the ride. If we get in online before the ride I'll be sure and let you know.

looks like you won't be able to pre-load the Garmin. Is that a deal breaker for you to ride? :-)

Hey CM -

I'm still on the fence about going, but since BikeWNC is going, I may have to just go ahead and go...he can pull me and my bum knee up all the hills:). It would be nice to ride in my ole "stomping grounds": Cat-ah-wah-bah County :)

I'll look about doing a route....one should be able to figure it out enough to make a Garmin file.

Hey Vega - you gonna go???

What hills? I'm done with hills after 1:30pm Monday. OK, with a bum knee you get a waiver on pulling my sorry butt around.

If I do, I'm only doing the 30-miler. And I am not stoppin' to look at the scenery. Don't want to give those native creatures time to coil around my tires!

If you need a place to crash, wolfpack, you have a place here, regardless of whether I go. :)

guys,

i think i'm gonna change my mind about riding this event:(

i plotted the course using bikeroutetoaster and there's a lot of climbing on this route...i seriously dont think i'm gonna be up to that by next weekend. even if i do, i could set myself back tremendously...

so...you guys have fun and maybe sometime this fall we can get together for a ride....

Sorry to hear that. I just can't win with the ladies.

So how much climbing did that contraption ?toaster? say there is on the route?

Now take that number and divide it by 3. That's the amount of actual climbing on the ride.

Vega - no slinking in this thread please.
