A friend (a bit more on the acquaintance side) just asked me to go to a Bath House with him. He has a girlfriend (but apparently has hit on other girls in the same scene...so not sure how commited that whole situation but knowing his gf I don't think she's the swinging type) so I don't think he's hitting on me. He's also completely ripped - while me...well check out the Clydes section ;)

Besides the obvious discomfort with the two different body shapes juxtaposed do straight guys do this sort of thing? Man this sounds like such a stupid question! I need to train this week but next Monday after a 145 mile ride I'm trying to do....bet a sauna would feel pretty damned good. The place is here (http://www.wallstreetbath.com/) by the way.

Thoughts?

Hi, Siu! :) <wavin'> You were right, I'm still up, but only 'cause I just finished eatin' a dinner for three people. Boy, did that hit the spot after my long ride today! But I'm still short a couple of hundred replacement calories.

<rootin' around in freezer> AHA! <grinnin' triumphantly, holdin' up HD Cherry Vanilla> :p

Hey, sistuh, did I tell you I finally saw Brokeback Mountain? Great film!

stop being such a guy, nothing wrong with a full day of pampering.

just make sure to be straight up as not to send any message that could get you into a weird situation.

It's a bit odd, I'd say. It would raise some eyebrows around here, that's for sure.

Like going to a bath house with a totally ripped guy?

Not that there is anything wrong with a spa, personally I would prefer a steak house, some beer, maybe a movie....

:roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: Not that there's anything wrong with that! ;)

It looks like from the pictures people have bathing suits on which makes me feel a bit better. Also looks like mixed crowd which is even better. They even have that Russian style I think where you beat yourself with pine branches.

No, not phobic - have a few gay friends and have bar hopped with them. My only 'phobic' moment came when one guy at a party put a leather mask on me and wrapped me in plastic wrap, found out afterwards he was gay and didn't want to give the wrong impression.

There are different 'kinds' of bath houses especially in the city - just seeing if anyone else has gone to one in general.

*Puts speedos on list to get*

The website looks like it is essentially an upscale spa near the Financial District. It's in a good section of Manhattan and is marketed to both men and women. Jeez, just go sit in the steamroom and sauna and chat with everyone in the room and maybe even share a few laughs.

I prefer a natural hot spring. Go with three or more guys and you won't feel as if you're half of a couple. I don't think it's "weird" either way.

That place looks expen$ive.

It's birch, actually. And it's Finnish. No wait, maybe the Russians beat themselves with pine.

I never understood what kind of monsters would wear a swimming suit to a sauna, but there you go... Obviously I'm in no position to judge whether it's socially acceptable for you to go with him. It would certainly be no big deal around here, even with the swimming suits off.

+1 to both sentiments. One positive about hippie etiquette (which is the dominant etiquette at natural hot springs in the PNW) is the lack of weirdness around bathing clothed or not, mixed gender groups or not. Bike Forums meet-up at Bagby, BroMax? :)

See...if I was hiking in the woods with a group I wouldn't feel weird about jumping into a hot spring with people sans suit. Comfort level I guess...

Finnish is hot-cold-hot-cold right?

After reading this tread I got to thinking about the scene in Friends were Chandler's glasses were fogged up and he sat on his father in law's lap in a sauna. :D

Be careful!

There's bath houses, then there's "bath houses".....the latter being a thinly veiled disguise for people who just want to get laid by others of the same gender.

If it's a real bath house, go for it, nothing wrong with a little pampering as mentioned previously. If it's the other type, I'd politely remove myself from that scenario.

....best bet is to look at ads for the place, you'll be able to tell what it is by how they are marketing it. There is a pretty well known one in San Jose that advertises in teh papers all the time, and every ad has some guy jumping out of the water or some lame "oh look, tis is sexy" type cheeseball photo (replace guy with woman throwing her hair back while jumping out of water for comparison).

Hot-birch-cold-hot-birch-cold.

Actually there are very few fixed rules to Finnish sauna (very few that are worth adhering to, at least). It's all about relaxing, peace and quiet... a strict protocol by some sauna Nazi doesn't go along well with that. I enjoy the hot-cold -cycle myself.

I thought vodka was mandatory in Finnish saunas? Koskenkorven was the drink of choice (cuz it was cheap!) when I was there.

I was in Finland up north of Tampere a few years ago for work and got invited to a beautiful sauna on the shores of a lake. It was March, I think, and there was a bit of snow still on the ground. We all stripped down, did the birch branch thing, then ran out along a dock and dove into the icy water. Then we'd add the most important part of the cycle: beer. So it's hot-birch-cold-beer and repeat. :)

One of the Finns took pictures of us running bare assed down the dock and emailed them to my co-worker's wife by accident (she worked for the gov't also and her email address was only one typo away from his). :D

So it's hot-birch-cold-beer and repeat. :)Sounds like the complete drill to me. Maybe add sausages somewhere along the line.

Like I said, very few fixed rules to go by, but sending the pics of your sauna guests to *@(insert their company name here) is definitely one of them.

I always have my shorts on unless I'm in the shower.

Certainly I wouldn't go in the sauna naked. Imagine how much naked guy ass has been on the benches. Makes one shudder.

Fancy spas like the one hyperlinked by the OP provide thick towels to sit upon in steamrooms so your junk doesn't touch where others' junk has been earlier. Additionally, everybody wraps themselves in additional towels around their waist and/or abdomen depending on whether it's a man or woman entering the steamroom/sauna.
