Ok....the rule is you get ONE trip to any event in time to the past only (and the return...you must return). I limit it to only the past because you can't know, for sure, of any events in the future.

What time/place/event do you choose to visit?

I'd love to spend a few days with Abraham Lincoln. Probably between his 1858 unsuccessful run for Senate and his 1860 election to the Presidency. He absolutely amazes me, and I'd love a chance to see what he was like, in person.

I'd be afraid to go back to something more personal: I'm not sure I could handle the pain of leaving it behind again.

For me...I'm thinking of some "hero" types I'd like to meet too.

Sir Isaak Newton
Claude Shannon
Gandhi
Bruce Lee

I'd have to think harder before making a "final decision".

To the moment when Yitzhak Rabin was assasinated - to do anything necessary to stop it. I believe there are certain historical events that have been major turning points for humanity and how things will go for us ever after. I sincerely believe Rabin's death was one of those turning points. :(

My choice would have been to be near a grassy knoll in Dallas Texas on November 22, 1963. To see the truth...

On a happier note, my close second option would be to be in Paris France on July 23, 1989. Lemond & Fignon. Classic.

1983 - I'd have bought Microsoft stock instead of that first new car. I might bet on a couple sporting events as well. :)

Sometime a couple thousand years in the past. I'd bring a bunch of gadgets and penicillin and other cool stuff with me. Impress a bunch of people, cure the sick, blahblahblah, and tell everyone that I am a god and should be deeply revered. I'd then tell them that I must travel to a different planet to fight some monsters, but that I will be reborn on Earth and tell them exactly when and where and that I should be offered gifts and nubile young women for the remainder of my mortal life or I will destroy the Universe.

Late 1930's early 40's - the Savoy Ballroom. Hang out with Frankie Manning, Al Minns and all those cats (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTg5V2oA_hY), be there front row for the Battle of the Bands between Chick Web and Bennie Goodman.

Well, there was one New Year's Eve about 15 or 16 years ago when the woman who is now my wife and I did some serious record-breaking wa-hoo, I've always wanted to re-live that night. But I suppose with enough sweet-talk and jewelry I could convince her to re-stage it now, so I suppose that would be squandering the time travelling opportunity.

For some reason I've always been fascinated with European civilization (sic) after the decline of the Roman Empire and before, oh, say the signing of the Magna Carta. I'm not sure if there are specific events or locales, so just plunk me down near the banks of the Rhine in, I dunno, how about 650 AD.

Make sure I've had all my shots. And am heavily armed.

I would go back to when I was running state semi-finals, and shove myself off to the side before I get a chance to really hurt myself.

The rest of it I see as altering history to way too many people at once.

Maybe I'd go bring modern guns to the texicans at the alamo. Or maybe I'd go and kill Hitler in about 1935. Or, if I could get the money, maybe I'd go back to about 1920 and start a company that would make reliable cars that got 100 MPG.

Going back without making changes: I'd have to go with "the beginning." Whether it's the big bang or "let there be light", etc.

Going back with changes: 9/10/01. We now know where they spent the night. I would likely be in prison for murder when I got back to the present...

I definitely wouldn't go back to undo anything. This is not to say my life has been pain free (far from it) but that pain has shaped me - not sure what I would be if I hadn't gone into the crucible...

Honestly, I probably wouldn't bother - after all, we are living history NOW - very few things would be more interesting than what I am currently experiencing.

Assuming I would have access to a quality time machine that would allow me to carry some things with me, (like Jules Vern's, and not an off brand, one-way ticket, buck naked on a bolt of lightning, a la "The Terminator), then I would like to photograph Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China's court.

If I could change something, I'd also try to intercept the time I made THE first mistake that set off a chain of bad events.

Going back in time to buy stock and leave it in a fund for me to retrieve at the present day wouldn't hurt either.

+1 There is no way of knowing how a change in the past will impact on today and the future. I agree that getting rid of Hitler back in '35 would be a good thing...perhaps the world would be 1000 times better...perhaps a bunch worse, for example the Soviet Union could now rule the world.

Anyway, I think it would be interesting to observe my parents or their parents as children and teenagers.

I would go back to the time about 30 minutes before Bill Clinton said, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Monica Lewinsky." I would kidnap him, lock him in a room and tell him what a mistake it would be if he didn't tell the truth. I would tell him that if he lies, the country might find out and turn into a self righteous society. I would tell him how this would cause citizens of the U.S. to elect a conservative president that would lead to the deaths of thousands and thousands of people.

I would tell him that this would cause the rest of the world to turn on the United States and that the number of people who wanted to kill Americans in the world would go out of sight, compared to the number that existed on that day. This would cause the world to be even that much more dangerous for our children in the future.

I would tell him that his untruth would cause the price of oil to escalate from less than $1 per gallon on that day to more than $3 per gallon. I wouild tell him that oral sex, is REAL sex and that in this case it was more dangerous than the traditional kind.

I think it's also important to consider what you would do if you found out the truth of certain events. ie, who shot Kennedy, etc. And who would believe you anyway.

As an observer, I wouldn't mind checking out creation. And probalby some epic sporting events. Maybe some of my musician heroes performing such as SRV, Randy Rhodes, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Hendrix, etc.

As a participant, I'd probably do something about a few of the chicks I found out were interested but I never did anything about.

As for the mistakes in my life.. which are many.. I'd only want to change those that hurt others. Those that hurt or put me where I am I accept full responsiblity. Plus I'd probably make those mistakes again, knowing me.
