It is Bike to Work Week, and Bike to Work Day is Thursday, 5/17/2007. I hope everyone who can, does ride to work this day. We need to show the public that bicycling is a viable mode of transportation.

Energizer Stations for cyclists! - Pick up breakfast/refreshments/goodies on your way to work. These will be available at various locations between 6:00am-9:00am. See listing of energizer stations around the bay: http://www.bayareabikes.org/btwd/index.php?page=energizer.php

Anyone making the run up/down Foothill X-way? Gotta get from SJ to RWC. (Bike) Commute days are always good days...

I'll be on my bike dark and early 530am. Gonna try to get my boss to let me come in late Thurs to go and get some goodies at the energizer station.

I might make a slight detour, and go out to Foothill Expy, then back to Mountain View, before heading into work. Probably head out on the road by 6 am.

It's a dumb question, but what's RWC?

I usually use caltrain + bike, and/or ride all the way in the afternoon.

Maybe I will ride to work in the AM on Thursday. San Mateo to downtown SJ. But I'd have to start pretty damn early ;)

I use foothill expy and canada as my "main drags"

I just started biking to work again a couple of days a week, after a long hiatus. Just lazy.

Mine's 15 miles each way, from Union City across the Dumbarton Bridge and along the bay past Sun Quentin, then Haven Ave & East Bayshore out to Seaport Blvd in RWC. The only climb is the Dumbarton (about what, 100 feet, LOL), but I generally have a nice stiff sidewind & then a headwind to contend with on the ride home early evening.

I'll be stopping off at the Energizer Station at University Ave & 84, on the peninsula side of the Dumbarton across from Sun, to pick up some Bike to Work goodies.

Who knows why the Bay Area (maybe all of CA?) decided to make this on Thursday instead of Friday?

Part of me suspects a conspiracy but I can't think of a motivation.

Personally, I'd just as soon not bike to work on Fridays. Lots of companies (including mine) have Happy Hours late Friday afternoon.

I've never had a problem with it being on Thursday. I'm just one of the fortunate ones, work close to home. I typically take a slight detour, over to the bike trail (bypassing Lawrence Expressway). However, on bike to work day, I'll take a longer detour to add miles, and pick up some goodies.

I work from home, but I'll be commuting with my GF on the tandem from Walnut Creek to San Ramon and then ride back home.

To avoid Critical Mass showing up and scaring new riders and/or avoiding the more inattentive Friday drivers?

^Critical Mass is the last Friday of the month.

There is a fairly large event happening at Capitol Park in Sacramento this Thursday. I'm working a booth for the Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen, stop by and say hi.

Will do. I will probably ride in with Sen. Torlakson's group. He and Asm. Levine and a few others are planning to ride up the Delta from Antioch. They did this last year, and met up with a bigger group at the Freeport Bridge for the ride into town. There were a couple of other legislators and the Lt. Gov. It'd be great to get the Governor to do this but I doubt it's likely. I'm waiting to hear from the Senator's press sec'y about the details.

I thought I would mix it up a bit and drive to work, but then I discovered there will be free food at my work and "energizer" stations. :D I will be round 7:30 am at this one: Central & Bowers on Black/sliver cannondale roadbike with blue/gold messenger bag. If you see me say hi.

I remember reading your posts about the ride last year. I'm impressed that they actually do the ride.

Torlakson's a former PE teacher, if I recall correctly, and a serious cyclist/triathlete. He's led some group rides from the West Steps in the evenings after Session. The guy can ride. Levine just posted a 3:15 Boston Marathon time. So they're pretty much the co-chairs of the Fit Caucus.

Ride every day from Marin to San Francisco Financial District.

If you are riding 5/17/07 - beware of the rookies who ride to work one day a week. They may need a heads up and help with some common sense.

Yep, I start in campbell around 8 and normally get to foothill/homestead by 8:30 or so. I'll be on my red/silver Jamis with a black brooks pro saddle. Looks like there's two Energizer stations along foothill too!

Cool, I'll keep an eye out for some of y'all; jobob, you don't work off Chesapeake or at the end of Seaport do you? I'm occasionally on that side of 101, and if I'm not I'm over on the Woodside part by Longs. Maybe we'll meet up one of these days.

Since I need to use a motorized vehicle to get between bldgs, I'm going to drop off a vehicle at work tomorrow and ride home so I can ride both ways on Thursday... I should just leave some clapped out rent-a-wreck at work so I can ride my bike all the time. :)

Yikes, lots of traffic over by that Longs, with people scrambling to get on 101. Be careful out there, y'hear?

I'll be riding on Thursday. But I do so every day, rain or shine, so I probably won't get any special attention. Sounds like all the fun is in Sacramento proper. Any energizer stations on this side of the river will probably be in front of (or inside) one of the bars on West Capitol. Though after this week, I might be tempted by such a thing...

Wow, how cool is that, one of our buildings is at the end of Chesapeake next to the boat sheds and launching area! Well, I'll keep an eye out for a crazy woman in training and I'll be sure to say Hi. :)

From a bike commuting POV you really nailed the issue with that area; there's a lot of congestion, lane changing, crappy surface and then to top it off the Lyngso or recycle trucks just want to run over you with their rear wheels. The rest of Woodside is a real walk in the park though; even the El Camino Real overpass is mildly entertaining sometimes.

Like spingineer mentioned earlier, it'd be nice if it warmed up a bit more so we can even out our tan lines a bit more...

Given that I live within a mile of work in Cupertino, I'm looking to mix it up a bit, since 4 minutes just doesn't say "bike commute" to me. You guys want to do the run up Foothill as a group ride?

Sure, how about meeting up at the corner of foothill and stevens creek or there-abouts?

Received this email today:

Tomorrow, May 17th, from 11 to 1, enjoy music, antique bicycles, award presentations, and drawings for bicycles at the Capitol.

Held in conjunction with the CalEPA Clean Air Celebration, the Capitol BikeFest will have 50 tables of information from bike shops, bicycle groups, public transit providers, clean air and walking organizations.

Bike raffle Bring a printout that shows you've logged miles to get your TShirt and a ticket for the raffle of commuter and folding bicycles.

Plan to gain lots of information about bicycling. An RT bus with bike rack will be there so you can practice loading your bike on a bus. One bike shop will offer routine maintenance and we'll have free, secure Bike Valet parking for those that bicycle to the event.

Please check out the events page on

Hi, folks, I'm up for a group ride up Foothill. I'll hit it at the end of Homestead at somewhere around 6:45ish because I have an 8:30 meeting. The toughest part is probably coordinating schedules, but I hope to see some BFers out there. There's also the ride home, and I'll probably hit Foothill on the Stanford side ~5:30 or so.

Rubber side down!

My commute is approximately 20 feet (bedroom to office...) but I am thinking of hitting the Noon Ride to make up for the lack of riding BTWD :D

Oy, 6:45 is a little early for me. But I'll still meet anybody who's interested at Foothill and Homestead this morning at 8 if anybody wants to sleep in a bit first.

I actually saw fewer riders than usual on the way in to work this morning. Granted, I was running a bit late, but not much moreso than usual.

Oh well, maybe the ride home will turn into a mini-Critical Mass.

7Rider,

do you ride caltrain with your Seven?

I think I've seen you before. PM Commute hour, northbound.

I saw a guy with a Seven wearing an AV jersey.

EDIT: I guess your Seven is a MTN Bike, so it wasn't you.

I have a 3.5 mile commute without getting on Caltrain. Yesterday, I commuted with my Seven to try out some new shoes, pedals and grips, and because I was going to ride to a trail head after work. That bike was such a dog on the roads, after work, I went home, jumped on my Madone SL, and did a road ride instead. I usually commute with my Bianchi Axis because it has fenders and conti gators with slime tubes.
