Does anyone else here have rednecks in the family you have to deal with? Sometimes you have to be around them, like yesterday when we went to my mother in law's house for Mothers Day. Over the last couple years I have taken up bicycling and changed to a mostly vegan diet and dropped about 60 pounds. I am not a large guy so I am now somewhat thin. Now I get asked if I got AIDS and they seem to associate a vegatarian diet with being gay.( BTW I eat what everyone else does when we have family get-togethers so I don't ask for special treatment and I don't preach like a born again fat guy.) I can put up with this crap but this time I overheard on the sly comments about my 8year old autistic son.In one way I was proud of myself for not flying off the handle and starting crap. In another way I am sorry I didn't give Mr I-Am-Still-On-Probation-For-Slugging-My-Wife-While-I-wasDrunk a well deserved cock punch and spit on his fat smart mouthed wife. How do other people deal with these types of situations.

Got rednecks in the family and proud to be one of them. Redneck and stupid are entirely different. You have stupid in your family it sounds like. Sorry about that.

Now stop giving us rednecks a bad name.:D

I have lots of rednecks in my family. Redneck doesn't always mean racist, stupid, or poor. Just different. My redneck relatives live in upper michigan. Me personally, I get along with my redneck relatives very well.

Wow... what a bunch of scum bags. If my redneck family (KY and GA) talked ***** like that about my kid I'd try to dis-associate myself from them if at all possible. ie - make yourself scarce. You don't need them if they have to make up for their inadequacies and lack of intelligence by talking smack about others. and when you have your own get-togethers intentionally do not invite them. hehe!

So you did well by biting your tongue. But I know it's hard to do so sometimes.

On the otherhand, if it gets real bad, especially if they talk about your son, then let them have it. You can probably beat them mentally with your vocabulary instead of letting it come to blows. Sometimes intelligent words can hurt more to less intelligent people than a "cock" punch. haha!

Good luck.

I have rednecks and stupid in my family. If they start getting on my nerves, I usually just say stuff that I know will offend them or at least make them uncomfortable.

At a weekend retreat, I had an uncle ask if I was gay when I was in high school, (because, obviously, punk rock = gay ). With a wink I said, "You might be on to something. Which cabin are you sleeping in tonight?" He didn't talk to me for the rest of the weekend.

Lots of Rednecks on my dad's side of the family.

Let's put it this way....one of my cousins showed up in the kind of clothes you would wear to pick up guys when she showed up at my grandfather's funeral....not to mention the tires of her truck were about chest high to me......how anyone wearing such a tight skirt could get into or out of that truck defies me....maybe she has a hoist or something.

The fun goes on from there....the family I met back in Cali were pretty much hardcore rednecks....I'm talking broken down cars in the frontyard, hound dogs howling all the time, spitoon by the front door (and mama's the one using it) kind of hardcore. It was just horrible.

.....I'm amazed things have turned out as well as they have....I guess my grandfather had the smart genes :p

I'm from Kansas, so I am pretty certain that I am a red neck. If so, that is ok. What isn't ok is what you describe above. You sound EXACTLY like me. I always feel like a freak at family food gatherings. I'm not a vegetarian but I don't eat a lot of things, including red meat. Turns out if you don't eat red meat in the flannel shirt crowd around here, then they think something is wrong with you.

I always get this..."what you don't eat STEAK? Damn, you look like you need to eat some steak." At that point I always have a choice to make. Do I say the obvious thing and return the comment? "Well, damn, looks like you need to quit eating steak. How many chins are you going for anyway?"

But instead i usually blush and act like I am wrong to make the other person feel at ease. After all, that's sort of how peer pressure works anyway. You never want to be on the odd numbered side of anything right?

I've also had countless people tell me I am too thin, ask me if there is something wrong etc. The most amazing part of the whole thing is that my diet basically follows the guidelines that are printed on the side of just about every food product sold in this country. Most rednecks don't quite get that one.

Huh? "You don't eat at McDonald's? What da hellsa matter with you?" Uhhhhhh, excuse me Jethro, but one big Mac pretty much puts you over the top on fat for the entire day based on recommend consumption of fat.

So at the end of the day, (20 years later)I end up being the same size that I was in High School. I was around 150 lbs then, and I am around 150 lbs now. It's no accident. I was around 200 when i started to ride and eat better 4 + years ago.

Anyway, it's hard to follow a good diet. Sometimes it's hard to exercise. And it's always hard to stand up to peer pressure, even when it is in your own family. But as you know, it is well worth it. Most of the fatties are just trying to make themselves feel better about not being disciplined. This is absolutely no different than kids in school, pressuring kids to do drugs. It's just a more accepted form of peer pressure.

Not that I'd call my Auntie and Uncle rednecks or anything. But they are in Oxyard, Ca or whatever Siu calls it. When I was there the way they ate was terrible. We'd eat three meals a day, all of which were terrible greasy garbage, boughten from somewhere. After having eaten a massive hamburger, and deep friend curly fries. Or half a pizza, I'm stuffed. They both are ready for desert!

My uncle get's up and gets a heaping bowl of chocolate ice cream(like he needs it) and sits down and consumes it. After that maybe even a bowl of sugar cereal. I'm then asked "you want some desert", and I politely respond "no, I'm good". A few times my uncle called me a p*ssy and said I don't eat enough. The whole time I was there people are telling me I don't eat enough. Are you ****ing crazy!! I just ate my daily calorie quota in my breakfast!! Holy ****, people need to get a grip. That's why you weigh 300 pounds, because you practically live off of fat and carbs.

My whole family is rednecks.....maybe not as bad as the ones you describe, but quite rednecky nonetheless. About 5 years ago, when my mom was still alive, she said to me one day at an Easter family get together, "Chris....how did you get in to this family? You just don't belong at all.". I didn't have the heart to tell her what a great compliment that was. LOL

What did I do? I started making family get togethers very short. I'd always have "something" I had to get home to do, so I always "couldn't stay long". That worked somewhat well. Then....my final blow was to move to the other corner of the country. Here I am! ;)

Sounds more like your family suffers from stupidity or ignorance than red-neckedness. Red-neck doesn't mean mean & stupid. Red-necks merely suffer from not caring what city-folk think, right?

Time for Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redneck I guess I am not a redneck. I think the term gets confused with hick.

Sorry if my use of the term redneck offended anyone. What is so baffling to me about them is they are both (my wife's sister and her husband) educated people. Hell, she is a teacher and works with some special needs children. And my mother in law who is not a stupid person in most other ways, likes him and makes excuses for him abusing her daughter. This is crazy. It also drives me nuts to be in the same room with them when a TV is on. They will point out actors and say crap like " oh yea, this guy pegs my gaydar off the screen, there are a lot of shows about blacks and mexicans these days they are taking this country over" and junk like that . It's like they are a couple of 12 year olds. Thank god they live 60 miles away from me. What sucks is i am going to have to have them over here when we have my kids birthday party in June. Grandma won't come without them and my wife doesnt want to upset her mother, even though she was about as mad at them as I was this weekend. I think I'll cook just Boca burgers and soy dogs for them to piss the asshats off.

Every family tree has a few idiots that shake out. Doesn't mean they are rednecks. What is the definition of "redneck"?

If it means old fashioned, loving the out of doors lifestyle vs the big city and big crowds? Well, that might be me :D

I`m a cultured redneck. I have a 4WD truck , tractor, 9 chainsaws, and I dress in jeans and T`s 24/7/365 etc but I have a weak spot for symphonies, fine cuisine, good jazz and I have traveled extensively. Rednecks are good, white trash is a different story.

I got a laugh the other day.....one of the rednecks in the family had a bright idea thay called me about to see if it would work....they wanted to add a second story to their home.

....keep in mind I am being perfectly serious...I am not pulling your legs.

....their home is a trailer.

....they wnated to do this by building a frame above the first one, and setting the second one on top, then putting a staircase in.

....this just left me completely flabbergasted. I told them to just move the trialer to the edge of the land, and build a hose already. It's a trailer on 2 acres of land for pete's sake. Or just get a manufactured home to replace it....anything better than a double-high.

....sheesh....rednecks, gotta love em for comedic value :)

I think the Supreme Lord is giggling over all american housing. I mean, Europe typically does not get bad weather and they build brick and concrete houses. America gets tornadoes and hurricanes year after year and the same stick houses are built on the spot where the old ones just flew up to the sky from.

jsharr
05-16-07, 09:24 AM
Not true, tons of research is being done on tornado proof housing. Texas Tech Univerysity (http://www.wind.ttu.edu/Shelters/WindProtection.php) is a leaader in this field. Dupont (http://www2.dupont.com/Stormroom/en_US/) makes a tornado safe room that can be incorporated into an existing house or new construction. Storm cellarsa are being poured into foundations of new homes, I have a friend with one in his new home. Man is always going to lose when the forces of nature are turned against him. To think otherwise is foolhardy. We can do what we can to limit our loses, but we live where we live. What about all the people who live in the Alps where avalanches occur. Floods, earthquakes, Europe has natural disasters as well. Stacking portable housing one on top of the other would be foolhardy no matter where in the world you did it.

scrapmetal
05-16-07, 09:41 AM
But why dont you build the whole house like the storm cellar? It would take some roofing, maybe broken windows, but it would not wipe out walls down to the basement.

Floods and avalanches - that can be really avoided by picking up a location. Earthquakes in Europe? Not common at all. But if I know, there is gonna be super strong wind blowing over my house every season - well, why not get ready for it?

jsharr
05-16-07, 09:53 AM
I have lived in Texas and or Oklahoma for all of my life. Not once, never in 40 plus years has my house or a home of any of my relatives been damaged by a tornado or even high wind. I have been close, very close to quite a few tornados. I had blow a rock through my car window in fact, but the roof stayed on my house. Each year more work is being done to make houses safer.

Here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/2381585.stm) is a list of earthquakes for Italy. 40,000 people lost homes in 1997 alone. 2735 killed in 1980. What is Italy doing to stop this horrific loss of life and real estate?

How many die each year in India/Asia due to monsoon/typhoon season?

Tornados are a fact of life for much of the United States and our building codes are adapting to meet the challenge they present every year.

scrapmetal
05-16-07, 10:16 AM
I am sure Italy says the same thing:

- I live in this house all my life and earthquake never came close by
- Building codes are adapting to meet the challenge :)

I remember reading about codes changed for Florida. Using longer nails and stronger plywood. :) Now, when disaster like that happens, people go for a shelter in schools and public buildings, because they are built stronger than private homes. Why aren't private homes built like public buildings?

jsharr
05-16-07, 10:24 AM
Simple economics and availability. People buy what they can afford. Old building built with old technololgy, new building built with new technology. Not as many new houses in the right price range for all buyers.

As to Florida, I beileve the most effective building code changes are tie straps made of metal that tie the roof the the walls.

Oh, and get used to Coors Light, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Miller Genuine Draft or Budweiser....they are bound to have cases upon cases of one of those beers.

And last, don't talk bad abuot their dogs, any of em....they will get mighty pissed...and do NOT ever even by accident kick one of their dogs, that's war right there.
