Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - Any chance of a GPS/Cyclometer forum?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

just figured i'd ask.. someone posted the idea in one of the hourly Garmin threads.. probably not a bad idea..

Probably not anytime soon.
Most cyclists don't have GPS and many don't have or want a cyclocomputer.

ok, but currently there are over a thousand threads on the topic:

233 'garmin' threads
254 'cateye' threads
39 'cyclometer' threads
500+ 'computer' threads (granted, that's including regular computers)

...and if a search for 'GPS' was allowed, there would be even more...

just sayin'..

So we're closer to 500 then. Of that figure, how many garnered any real interest? I've seen threads where all it contained was posts from members that swore there was no need for a cyclocomputer. And where would we put this forum?

Just asking, as people don't usually take these things into consideration. They do have a GPS section on the motorcycle forum I belong to, but they also only have about 8 different topics on there. We've got a much longer list here, and we don't want it to get out of control.

I for one am one of the foolish fools interested in putting a GPS on my bike. ;) For exampe, I'm trying to compare a couple models and would be very helpful to see what others recommend, experienced, etc.

And it is frustrating trying to search within this forum, as can not search for just "GPS", must do as the above person, type in brand names, etc.

Maybe have a section for Electronics-Computers, where those that are indeed interested in such topics can banter about these types of subjects. Just a suggestion, but IMHO would make this forum richer, add some value to itself for that material.

Brian, with all respect, maybe its because the GPS/computer/electronics are scattered about the forum is why there is little 'interest', coupled with the difficulty of doing a search for just 'gps'? Just a thought. :)

FWIW, such as these types of opinions/experiences would be valuable here I believe:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/discussionboard/discussion.html/ref=cm_rdp_st_rd/104-4533638-9973564?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B000CSOXTO&store=yourstore&cdThread=Tx1XRTL946H1EB4&reviewID=R1YVJSOJP2ZGXF&displayType=ReviewDetail#wasThisHelpful

PS: What would it hurt to have it somewhere, and if no interest over a few months, then just merge it somewhere or delete it all? For example, I'm on a computer forum, where at one time all things Apple/Macintosh was merged with non-Windows material. I made suggestion, and received various comments such as what have seen here, but the admin/owner of the site created a section for us fruity ppl, and we have seen a vast increase in the posts/interest within there.

I'll give it some thought. Give me a day or two.

perhaps make a bike add-ons forum? it'd include powermeters, gps, cyclometers, etc.

What did you decide? :)

Good grief man!!! He said give him a day or two!!!

Don't you realize that janitors are just a tad faster than maintenance personnel?!?!?

The janitor thing is a joke. I've got to figure out where to put this forum.

Ok, you want the forum? Help me out here. Which brands make GPS units for cycling?

Garmin makes the eTrex Legend which I use for cycling but it's technically made for hiking, etc. It works great. The Garmin Edge 205/305 both are made for cycling. Not sure if anyone else does.

But I still say that my previous suggestion might be better: maybe a bike computers/computing forum. That way it'd be powermeters, gps, cyclometers, Heart rate monitors. I think that would get a lot of traffic.

You want to come up with a title for the forum too?

donrhummy

Hmmm...let's see here's a few:

1. Cycling Tools and Analysis
2. Cycling Technology
3. Cycling Electronic Equipment
4. Cycling Computers, Etc.
5. Cycling Data-Obsession Tools

My vote's for #5. (You can remove the word cycling from any of them too)

I was thinking more along the lines of Electronics & Gadgets. Opinions? Anyone? Anyone?

It works, but "Data Obsession Tools" is much more fun. :D

Please make a list of as many of the devices as you can think of that may be of interest in this new forum, and I'll get the ball rolling some time this weekend.

Thanks,

Brian

GPS, Cyclometer, Power meter, Heart Rate Monitor, cycling software (for the trainer), flight deck (shimano's electric one that lists what gear you're in), electronic shifters (I believe campy has one), bike-mountable cameras/video-cameras...

To add the the gadgetry:

Cell phones too can now be used as cycling specific GPS geekometers :). Take a look at AllsportGPS.com and BIMactive.com. Neat stuff for sure but I might just opt with a Garmin 305 if I can persuade the misses for the funds.

Oh, I'm either busy or lazy, depends on who you ask. :D We tossed it around in the mod queue, and you should see it soon.

Thanks for your patience.

Cool! No worries, I know you've probably got a ton to worry about both on the site and elsewhere. Thanks for doing this!

I also send my thanks. Such a forum would be a great idea for a new Garmin Edge 305 like me.

Hey broom pusher, thanks much for your help and time on this! :D ;)

j/k... :p

Serously, looking forward to place where can glean some help/info from those w/ similar interests. :)

Oh, I guess anything that can be used directly attached to the bike itself [GPS, compass, lights, cameras, etc.] and/or used at home in conjunction w/ riding [software, web site reviews?, etc.]. And, that title should fit quite well - Electronics and Gadgets; unless made it maybe Electrical Gadgets?

Nice! One suggestion: post a thread in the Road Bike forum to let them know they should post computer, etc questions in this new forum.

Now that a forum like the one suggested has been created by the mods., few people seem to be "on" it. I'm wondering if posting my questions on the Road forum, which is read by many dozens of people, might get a better response?

Shadowcaver

Hopefully, using the build it and they will [eventually] come theory, maybe it might take a while. Those that are interested might not know/realize that this section exists. Maybe, and esp. since it is for the electronical minded, we need to have flashing neon lighting, or have some GPS tracking locator for all to follow to the new section? :p Seriously, posting on another section then defeats the purpose of trying to grow and get interest in this particular place, right? :)

Maybe create a provocative thread/title and post in Road?

Maybe create a provocative thread/title and post in Road?

Maybe a sticky (for a week or two) announcing it? I suggest it only because since the new board was created, I've already seen 3 threads on GPS or cyclometers in Road Biking. I think people just don't know it's there.

Also, everytime an electronic thread gets started (and responded to) in Road, if the mods moved it to the new board, people who responded and started the thread would check to see if there were new responses and they'd end up in that board and perhaps might post something else there.
