Hello to whomever is out there,

I'm a student at Cornell about to embark on my first self-supported tour. Me and a friend are going to bike around Europe for a summer. I've found this forum extremely helpful in the whole planning and equipment buying stage. I spent a good week agonizing over the trailer vs. pannier question. Anyway, I'm riding a cyclocross bike (Kona Jake) with a Burley Nomad trailer. It's a solid bike and I'm really looking forward to logging some tour miles on it.

I'm very interested in bicycle advocacy and trying to increase the number of cyclists on the road. I realize I'm preaching to the choir here, but everyone needs to start somewhere. Probably because I'm a roadie/tourist at heart I really want to see bikes treated more as vehicles for transportation rather than toys for children. I have some thoughts of trying to make a career out of this (whether designing bikes/velocars, or just in an LBS or advocacy group) so if you hear of any job openings or have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Cheers,
Dex

Hello Dex, sorry I missed this post, but I was on holiday when it first appeared. Have you had any good experiences with Advocacy? It's always of interest to us...

Welcome to BF!

I haven't really had any experiences with advocacy. I would say I try to do my part by setting a good example for motorists and other bikers. I tend to obey the law when I bike (stopping at stop signs, waiting in line at stop lights, staying as far right as practicable, etc.) but nothing official. I would consider myself a vehicular cyclist but not a militant one. I ride in the shoulder when it's wide and not full of crap, but I'm not afraid to take the lane if I feel unsafe. If you know of any official ways to get involved with bicycle advocacy I'd love to hear about it.
