I'd greatly appreciate a little guidance for a clipless noob. Could you suggests brands that might work best for me and my narrow feet? I have mountain/platform combo pedals on current my bike (weekday communter/weekend rider) but ideally I'd like to buy a shoe that could use on my next bike too which will have road pedals. Are there any shoes that can accomodate road and mountian cleats/pedals? I've searched and learned alot but still wondering about this. About fit, am I right to avoid anything with heel slip (up/down) while walking? Or is the action on the pedals so different that the slip that is manifest when walk-testing the shoes not the most important thing to focus on for fit?

For narrow feet try a womens model.

Frankly, bike shoes run small. You have a name that indicates that you're a man. Don't buy lady shoes. It's really difficult for a fat-footed man like me to find wide shoes. Narrow shoes are a no-brainer,automatic, EVERYBODY'S loaded with them. Why wouldn't they be ? The single biggest complaint concerning cycling shoe fit is narrowness. I know of a half dozen sites sitting on shoes for that and only that reason.Click-on our beloved sponcers advertised in this forum. Sidi has narrow fit, if you fancy spending $150 to $200.

If you have narrow heels, I find that Shimano laced-up shoes are good.
