View Full Version : Bicycle shows in Texas?
I frequent the gun shows a lot, but are there bicycle shows happening somewhere in our great state?
TIA.
I'd like to know the same thing. Or maybe get the Texas BF's crew involved in organizing one somewhere? :D
RBM is a bicycle show guys. Lets just all meet there.

' looks like a really huge bike store. I will check them out when I get the chance someday.
Thanks!
Your welcome. The store at Coit/Campbell is the one I am to which I am referring. Have not been to the Frisco or Dallas stores.

There's frankenbike in Austin....
There's frankenbike in Austin....
That one is closer to me (Corpus Christi). Any link on that one?
HIJACK ALERT.
Hey DVC, my dad grew up in Corpus Christi, graduated from Roy Miller back in the 50's. I spent a bunch of time there as a kid visiting my grandparents. I love going to the T-head piers to fish.
How is the riding in CC?

Its flat and very windy. :)
I fish mostly at Bob Hall pier, caught me a big shark last summer. I've only been here for close to two years now (from N. Illinois). If you know some other fishing spots here, please do share. Fishing is one of the things that inspired me to stay here.
I will ask dad for some spots, not sure if what was hot in 1950 is still hot now. All we did was dunk frozen shrimp in the water, never really caught much.

We could ride our bikes to a gun show
We could ride our bikes to a gun show
I've done it twice already, during the last shows here in CC. :)
Not having to worry about parking spaces (I got a folding bike), is the biggest thing. I just can't buy any long gun and ammo's as it will be too heavy. :D

I would LOVE to go to a bike show! And RBM doesn't cut it, either. At a REAL bike show, there would be builders, too...I'm thinking in the vein of the Guitar show or what used to be Zoo World back in the '70s. Advertising could be on the REI and RBM bulletin boards as well as radio broadcast spots. Location could be the Dallas Convention Center...I think that place is empty so much, they could let a 3-day weekend go real cheap. Bike clubs could get their faces in public, makers and builders could get their wares in front of people, maybe have a few local musicians (if there are any left in Dallas) on a stage...good idea, no?

Who's getting this started?
Umm...Us???? Who knows how to start a ball like this rolling? I can get with Donovan at Uptown Cycles to find out how he gets all his publicity...make more phone calls...people do this sort of event planning for a living, from what I hear, so it's not impossible.
When would be a good time to have a thing like this? I am thinking early Spring, maybe early March before the main riding season starts? Maybe before Christmas?
I hate to look like I'm volunteering for this since I'm starting a !NEW! job next week...but I can make phone calls and do SOME research.
<edit> Just saw the Interbike site, Las Vegas, BIG show...I'm sure we can't be quite THAT ambitious, even with Cuda on the "payroll." After all, this IS Dallas.
Man it seems like Austin would surely have a bike show or some such with their bike friendly culture. Has Ravenmore been contacted about this? He might know.

There is a good chance I could get the show a break on the cost of printing for flyers, brouchures, posters etc

How big is the consumer show in Wichita Falls during HH100?
My thinking is that a bike show should be in conjuction with a ride. The White Rock Marathon is supported by a consumer show that weekend. So what local ride would be the most logical to go "big" and support a consumer show with it? Maybe MS 150? If Tour Dallas were better promoted could it grow enough? thoughts please.

I agree...it MUST be at the same time as a big draw...otherwise it would have to schedule to not compete with ANY ride (EXTREMELY difficult)...I reckon Tour Dallas is big enough for a small show, but getting booth space there would be a problem...this year there were very few vendors, is that normal? I need to look at current exhibitions to see what/how they do it.
I really think an indoor show would be best...opinions???
I sent Ravenmore a PM about Austin shows...
Never been to the HH100, so don't know either.
Richardson WildFlower Fest is this weekend and it has Wild Ride along with it. Tons of bands come to play, might be a good show to look at in the future?

is the Eisman(?)Center a convention center of sorts or just a performance/ theater center? If it is multi use it could be a good place to hold a show.
Just an aside: How does Big Town hold a gun show every two weeks, do these things not get old? One time its the "Classic Gun Show" two weeks later its " The Original" Gun show. Next Month same thing. Might be that the hall rental is cheap there.

I also like the idea of a local bike show, but I think it'd be hard to compete with Walker's NAHBS. I've never been to it, but might go next year. With this in mind, it might be hard to get anyone but a few regional bike builders to attend, unless you make it very appealing to them. Money talks, so if the cost is low enough and you get enough exposer, some might come. It's something I'd be interested in. I used to go to the HHH consumer show every few years, and they've always had a good turnout. Of course, it's a consumer show, not an industry show, so there's always going to be non bike-specific displays, and the whole purpose of the vendors is to sell, sell, sell. I know there are a few bike product reps around. You might talk to them to see if they'd be interested in showing some of their latest and greatest products. I think there would be a big difference between a rep showing their product line and a store selling their products (at an inflated price, as at HHH).
Anyway, I for one would like to see a local or regional bike show. Maybe not to compete with NAHBS, but include more consumer products. There are a few regional bike shows in other parts of the country. For instance here's a link to one in Oregon, so it can be done: http://www.oregonbca.org
You might want to start off small and see how it's accepted. Run in conjunction with a ride or event might be the way to go.
As a side note, I talked to Walker when he was planing his first show. I tried to get him to have it in Dallas, pointing out all that we have to offer, even though we're not the most bike-friendly place around. I pointed out some great convention places close to Love Field. Of course I did this so I wouldn't have to travel to the show. I also told him I would host an after show party for all the exhibitors and would supply the beer, barbecue, and belly dancers, but he decided to have it in Houston.
I went to the Houston NAHBS and it was pretty small scale as these things go.
I agree it would be good to have it in conjunction with a ride, even Tour Dallas, we just
don't have to be in the same place as the ride (also limits it to 1 day? not sure).
Wonder if Walker would consider holding NAHBS here, I do know that price plays into it,
not just for the exhibit tables but hotels, airfare etc. and location, has to be easily
accessible by lots of folks. . .

There USED to be lots of conventions, consumer shows etc at the Dallas Convention Center. The DART rail passes under it, and is within easy bike range of the American Airlines place where the Tour Dallas start/finished. During that same weekend could bring MANY people here for both events (start late Friday, end Sunday afternoon), especially cuz people would come from out of town for BOTH events but not either singly. Parking is a non-issue cuz you park on the Dart rail station and ride the rail in with or without your bike.
Lotek...what's all this about hotels, airfare, etc??? Do conventions provide room/board for vendors? What's normal procedure for that sort of thing???
I think Marty is saying that the bike business probably does not have huge marketing budget so that the vendors that come would not only want cheap both rental but cheap accomodations nearby, etc.
Seems like someone like RBM would be a natural for this. They have tons of companies taht they represent, (many of them being frame makers) maybe talk to Jim and Rhonda about starting some sort of charity/memorial ride and maybe have a big bike show/vendor area associated with it.

The Matrix Challenge (a RBM event) is being held at Fair Park in downtown and I know there are several empty buildings down there at the time of the event. One good thing about an all day crit is people are standing around all day waiting for their races and would have time to shop. Unlike a charity ride event where people are only around before or after the event. This is already a spectaor friendly event and would fit in nice with a bike show. Just another idea...
