Does anyone here actually know anybody who owns/rides $4000+ Lew Racing Boron wheels?

Not personally, but theres a bloke (means 'guy' in 'merican patentcad) over at the Serotta forum who raves about them. He also appears to have more money than God as he has a new top of the line bike every other week.

If I was single, and didn't have a mortgage and a couple of car payments...maybe.

Is his name "56/12 and 22/28"?

Yeah, he's got a set for each of his 7 Colnagos.

7 Colnagos?

That's a lot of Colnagos. And they probably all have Campy. The thought of this makes it impossible for me to continue. I must retire to my pew at the Our Lady of Dura Achee Chapel to pray.

Nope. This bloke is for real.

Everyone, write your congressman in support of any and all military pay raises, especially increases in special pay for physicians. :D

Not for nothing DP, but if the military purchased bicycles they would all be $10K Serottas with $5K Lew wheels. Except of course the Pentagon would figure out a way to pay double that. If we could all be military subcontractors, we could all have Lew wheels.

If he lets you demo those wheels he's effing insane. Unless, of course, they were freebies from Lew. Just sayin'.

I wouldnt say demo, I would say were pretty close friends and he trusts me with riding high end bikes.

If you buy two sets from lew you get a demo set for half off.

Also for an extra $800 you can get a no questions asked crash/ mishap replacement .

All the domestic pro teams ride clinchers anyway. They can't AFFORD tubulars. Seriously. That's what a local pro who rides for Rite Aid told me today. Tubulars are for the fat cat UCI Pro teams like Disco and CSC.

It's funny, if you do this as a hobby, and have decent income from your day job, your equipment choices don't have to be economically rational.( my equipment choices being exhibit A]

But if its a business, then the money needs to be justified, hence US Division 3 teams riding stuff we wouldn't.

Even at the TDF level, its not unusual for domestics on some teams to be riding ultegra equipped bikes.

At $4000+ a pop, they are rather laughable on many levels. But what stupid expensive, way schwag product is NOT that way? Nothing that's the very best EVER makes sense to most of us.

But the world would be a far sadder place without $400K cars or $4K bicycle wheels. I love it.

But I can't afford it. I feel like an OCP moron for having $1200 used Zipps in my garage.

A number of guys on the Weight Weenies and FairWheelBikes forums have these wheels and by all accounts, they sound pretty awesome. I won't be shelling out for them however. A far more affordable option is to buy their rims, pair them with some White Industries or Tune hubs and some X-Ray spokes and for about the same cost as a pair of Zipps you will have a wheel that is probably more durable that weighs in at just slightly higher than 1000 grams. Perhaps the best part is that you don't need to screw around with special brake pads.

If I ever decide to go with tubulars, that is how I will roll.

You could still own 5 Lew wheeled, Record equipped Colnagos for the price of some redneck's bassboat. That's one reason I love cycling. I can have the most scwagged bike on the market and not have a ton of money invested.

I'd agree. In the pecking order of schwagadelic hobbies, cycling is NOT expensive. Try boating, vintage cars, vintage guitars, flying (aircraft), etc. Forget it. My total investment in bike schwag is less than my Honda motorcycle set me back. The Honda has a better motor, but that's a whole other thread.

This is true. A guy at work is a complete nut about computers. He just built up a new "rig" as he likes to call it - liquid cooled, two video cards in SLI , Quad-core Intel CPU, blah blah blah. Total cost - a shade over $6000. The CPU will be second-generation inside of 6 months and I can absolutely guarantee you he will swap it out for a new one. I'll be buying him lunch when he does - he is great for hand-downs!

Some of those hobbies - boat, plane, car - can be shared with friends/the gf/battle axe/other half. Cycling can be pretty self centered. 5% of salary is about the most I can justify spending on a bike though...more if I were putting in 5,000 mile years like I keep saying I will.

I rode w a guy this summer who had a pair. We rode together for 10 days in all kinds of conditions (a gran fondo, circuit race, a mountaineous RR, and numerous long training rides w 10-12 mile, gnarly climbs and loooong descents ) and his wheels performed beautifully. The best part was his Colnago C50 tipped the scales at a whopping 13.5 lbs! He also said he didn't pay anywhere near list.
