I posted this in commuting yesterday, but today this became an advocacy issue for me.

Couple of state senators rode their bikes from their district into the state capitol today to promote bike to work week. Local talk radio host spend 5 minutes telling the audience how ridiculous and impractical commuting by bicycle was, according to him. His "reasons" why cycling to work was not practical was:

1. Too long---He lived 15 miles from work and would have to wake up too early

2. There are no shower facilities and he would stink. He went on for 2 minutes about having to sit next to stinky people at work.

3. Doesn't want to wear "tights" to work.

More from the put-upon talk show host who thinks commuting by bike is "silly"

TUESDAY, May 15, 2007, 8 a.m.
THE SILLY SEASON BEGINS EARLY
sykes@620wtmj.com

State Senator Jim Sullivan rides his bike to work: 80 miles.

It takes eight hours.

He doesn't get to the office until 2 p.m.

He gets a ride home.

But he's urging the rest of us to emulate him and ride our bikes to work.

Brian Fraley thinks it's just plain silly. (Make sure to catch the indignant comments from the Sullivan defenders, who seem to think that this sort of symbolic nagging should be immune from criticism.)

Quote:Bike 80 Miles to Work?
Tosa Senator Sullivan is Nuts
May 14th, 2007
This is just plain silly.

Today, State Senator Jim Sullivan, Executive Director of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin Jack Hirt, former State Representative Peter Bock, West Allis Alderman Marty Weigel, and others from the 5th Senate district are biking from Wauwatosa to the State Capitol for national Bike to Work Week. The group departed this morning, May 14th at 6:00 a.m. and the group will be arriving at the northwest steps of the Capitol at approximately 2:00 p.m.

Sullivan goes on to say:

“Biking is not only healthy and fun activity, but every mile that a bicyclist travels is a mile not ridden in a car, reducing traffic congestion and auto emissions. I encourage everyone around the state to ride their bike to work this week.”

We should all bike to work?

It is supposed to be 87 degrees today.

Where are we? China?

This just in. If you bike more than a mile to work, I have news for you. You STINK. As in you smell. Real bad. Your sweat-soaked clothes reek like a high school locker room. Your slicked back hair isn’t fooling anyone. We know it’s not gel keeping your locks swept back, it’s just sweat.

Oh, and you stink.
Most of you who bike to work are damn menaces on busy city streets, too. You demand rights and access to the roadways, but you zigzag through traffic and ignore signs, signals and the basic rules of the road.

Senator Sullivan, just how much work are you going to get done once you reach Madison after an 80 hour voyage? Perhaps you’ll hold a press conference? But will you do anything constructive today, like try to stop your party from raising taxes on my house, my car, my hunting licenses, the fuel for my car? My Ipod?

You should have driven to work instead, and used that extra time to thwart your party’s attempts to make this tax hell even hotter.

Now, go take a shower.

Why are people so ignorant?

My e-mail to the radio host:

I've been an avid listener of show for almost 10 years. I have not always agreed with you but always found your opinions to be reasonable and insightful. However, yesterday I was appalled over your comments about bicycling to work.

To begin with, there are a lot of professionals who cycle to work on a daily basis. I am an attorney and ride my bike 6-7 miles in to work when I don't need to go to court or drive to meetings.

Second, people who commute by bike do not "stink." If one wears appropriate wicking clothing and brings a small towel, deodorant, and change of clothes, one does not stink. I am able to fit a pair of dress shoes, change of clothes, and daily toiletries in my bag that I carry. I have never once had co-workers complain that I stink.

Given the soaring gas prices, cycling to work is a great way to save money. A conservative like you should appreciate that. It is also good for the environment. I am by no means anti-car, but do people really need to be driving that Hummer all by themselves 6 miles to work? Cycling to work also reduces stress and is a great way to get in shape. I, for one, have lost 20 pounds and quit smoking since I decided to start commuting to work via bike.

Charlie, you usually have informed opinions that are based on facts. Here, you are entirely off-base. Why don't you try and educate yourself a little about commuting by bicycle before trashing the concept on air with juvenile comments the equivalent of "you stink stupid."

Blah blah blah, another shock jockey getting his 5 seconds of fame. Look it's their job to be "controversial", which mostly means picking some "minority" group and start blabing about it. Because they have no skill to be truely controversial, and keep listeners interested in their garbage of a show. Just ignore the dumbass.

The interesting thing is the radio jock didn't have to ride a single mile and he still stinks.

Funny, I came across the same situation up here in Ottawa last week. A conservative-type broadcaster with whom I normally agree, claimed that cyclists were 'free-riders', what with all the cycling paths, aka MUPs etc.

The counterpoints above express my sentiments well so I won't repeat. But up here in Canada, we have our famous (infamous?) socialized public health system. I'm wont to argue that every kilometre logged on two wheels represents an incremental saving to the system. And Lord knows our system needs to save dollars.

This is the kind of fellow who, in the old days, would be found sitting around with his smoking buddies talking about why quitting smoking is a ridiculous idea.

Yeah, that's one thing I don't understand about so-called conservatives. They really seem to be against things people can do to save money. I've saved over 50K over the last 6 years by not driving my car and doing other frugal things. When I opt for a canvas bag at the store they give me a discount. When I use fluorescent bulbs and conserve energy I pay less money on electric bills. When I select low-water plants for the garden I save on the water bill. When I turn down the heat I pay less on the gas bill. All this helps the environment and 50K is enough to buy a nice car, but now I know I don't need one!

Charlie Sykes said that? The guy's a tool, but not as tooly as they come. And he's not a shock jock (conservative commentator, maybe, but not a shock jock). Mark Belling might puke out something extraordinarily stupid like that, but Charlie Sykes?

I'll admit that biking 80 miles to work (on taxpayer money) only to show up at 2pm is dumb. Yeah, it's for Bike to Work Week, but there are better ways to promote it. Maybe go for a ride around the Capitol Building at lunch. Something a little more well thought out. And I have no problem calling the Senator on it. But don't take it out on all commuters.

Edit: After reading a bit more, I see that Charlie didn't make the comments, a 'blogger' did. Well, aren't 'bloggers' great.

Why does the senator live 80 miles from his office? Isn't that kind of stupid, even if you're not riding a bike? Who in their right mind lives 80 miles from their job? I'm not defending the radio announcer, or his blogger, he/they are clearly idiots, but still, what can that legislator be thinking?

You might want to try reading up on some basic American politics. He HAS to live in his district yet commute to the capitol for state business..... If he didn't live in his district, he wouldn't be able to run as a representative.

I am offended! Why would you lump me (a conservative) in with all those liberal knuckleheads. I agree with everything you said (about being frugal) it only makes sense. If someone doesn't agree with your thoughts on conserving, I would suggest that the person is a liberal and they just don't know it:D

What I really want to know is what bike does he ride on that 80 mile commute? does he use a rack & panniers, or a back pack? what's his light setup? hid, halogen, or LED?.... and why doesn't he join us in the 'Very long Commute Club' threads?....someone here who lives in his constituency should contact him and let him know about bikeforums.

As for the radio shock jock, screw him. I couldn't give a rats ass what he (or any other dumb schmuck) has to say about cycle commuting.

Don't let that flourescent bulb break, or your savings are down the drain. They contain mercury, and it entails special cleanup. A commercial firm would charge you thousands. If you do it yourself, it's a bit less.

Whilst I am car-free, that's my life-style choice. I am not anti-car, I just think there is alot of unnecessary car use.

That's right - cycling is an option. Not everybody wants or can ride a bike. They may have real reasons for not considering it, or perhraps they just don't want to.

Admitting some non-cyclists can come up with silly excuses, when they could just tell the truth - whch is that they don't want to ride a bike.

As long as motorists let me ride from A to B safely, I'm "sweet as". To each their own!

Ever stop to think that maybe he doesnt really care and that his job is just to get a rise out of you? If so, hes doing a pretty good job of it. Ive noticed that most talk show hosts allways just pick the opposite position of the majority and argue irrationally to get a rise out of people. I just choose to ignore and continue on.

My choice in life is car-free. I am not anti-car, I am just don't like what cars do to the environment.

My ride to work is 10Km one way. The work I do is bush regeneration. The type of work I do makes me stink more then when I am riding my bike.

Riding to my work site is earier then catching public transport.

Next time you go to work or to the local shops cycle instead.

Sigh...

Nearly everything that comes out of the mouth of the howling noise machine of conservative radio hosts and pundits is caustic idiocy. I work with a guy who regularly listens to this form of "infotainment" and it's stressful to listen to...from all the erroneous or bent to the breaking point "facts" to the angrily strident crisis voice of the talking clown, it sets me on edge.

Then I realized why I know so many very very angry die hard conservatives.

Guys like this apply bad and venomous rhetoric to any number of topics and groups, and perhaps many times you've bought it and smiled along with the latest bit of snarky punditry. This time, unfortunately, you got caught in the frag pattern and it was a little eye opening.

Conservative radio amuses me, and I can't say it doesn't fill a function. As all those seething angry cagers approach the edge of irrationality, they can tune into an angry voice expressing a philosophy of self centered apathy and unaccountability, and hopefully the steady white noise of that voice will focus their anger into the monologue.

Which is better than focused on me.

So I suppose, to that end, these poor saps simply amuse me...but they serve a function as a form of outlet for vitriol of the worst kind.

There is little doubt in my mind that more people, particularly women would commute by bike if there where existant shower facilities. The radio dude's premise is right, but his conclusion is wrong. We should fight for tax breaks for companies, (the ones that actually pay taxes), to build shower facilities. Also they could give $100 checks to anyone who commutes more than 10 work days a month.

Corporate America would benifit and so would the worker. It is a win-win.

I personally do not sweat as much as all that. All you really need is a 5 gal camp shower.
