Mountain Biking - 2 part question.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Part 1
Went over the bars last night and seperated my shoulder. How long before I can expect to ride again? I was told to wear the sling for a couple weeks. Am I a fool to hope to be back on the trails in a month?
Part 2
I have a Specialized Hardrock with stock components. The part number is ST-EF29-8, the CI deck plus. I cant seem to find parts for these anywhere. It looks like the bracket, shifter and lever are all one. Where can I find a replacement, or am I better off upgrading to something else? I kind of want to just go cheap as I am selling the bike next year and upgrading a model or two.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks.

i separated my shoulder snowboarding last season. hurt like hell. i would ask your doctor that question rather than relying on this site. did he/she tell you to do any exercises?

Doctor didnt tell me anything. No Ice, no painkiller, nothing. Threw me a box with sling in it and told me to put it on and I could go.
Obviously I am the best judge of when I can ride again however I'm merely just looking for a rough idea of when I can expect to be back in action.
ttech, I have a hardrock too. Im replacing f/r derailleurs and shifters to xt components for about 100 bucks.

My buddy did the same thing while riding. He was back on the bike the next day and has been riding ever since. His might have been a little less serious though, but it was still seperated.

For the shoulder: after a couple of weeks get to a decent sports physio, get some training and work on building strength and ROM. I didn't on first injury: 3 injuries & 6 months later I was seeing an orthopaedic surgeon and was very close to reconstructive surgery.
I'd say take 2-3 months off the trails and work on the shoulder until it's good or you might regret it in the long term. I still have to do regular exercises on it now, 3 years later, most prabably because I didn't fix it right first time and got back into the sports too quickly.

Troie,
Where are you buying your XT stuff? That seems cheap...

Pain in the right context is an exquisite mechanism, like thirst is. Think of it as the healing time your body needs to repair itself. Without pain, you'd be subjecting tissues to stress before they are ready for it.
Youir bod will tell you when it's ready. Listen to it!

did separate it or dislocate?
You really need to discuss this with your 'new' doctor if you separated it. I just had a slight separation and the doc told me to stay off for several weeks. I did for most of that period. i did trainer exercises so as not to aggravate the injury but i did get back going before recommended. It still hurts some even after a year.

So much for the shoulder being seperated.
I was talking on the phone tonite and went to rest the phone on my shoulder so I could write a phone number down and my shoulder made a loud "POP" I was almost sick with pain.
30 seconds after that, it feels GREAT!! I little stiff from being in a sling for 2 days but otherwise it feels good. I can move it, support it, pretty much anything!
I'm still going to take it easy for awhile, however I think I just went from being off the bike for 6 weeks down to maybe 2 or 3!!

Sounds like is was dislocated...easy money...nothing to it at all. :) Next time scream in pain and run your shoulder into a wall. That should fix the problem :DF
moab, online. Ive been browsing jenson and pricepoint. They have excellent deals!
