Hmm, so overall there is little road rage in Portland; apparently much of what little it has overall is directed at cyclists.

Overall, more than one third, or 35 percent said they see drivers doing other things like putting on makeup, shaving or reading while driving. Miami (54 percent) emerged as the city where this was most likely to be seen, while Seattle (19 percent) emerged as the place where this behavior was least likely to happen.

"putting on makeup, shaving or reading"... "Seattle"... "least likely to happen"...

Yep, all checks out. Must have been the control group.

Perhaps that's because there are so many more cyclists than any comparably sized city in the country.

Or do you suppose it's because of all the bike lanes?

I don't think you actually even know what you're talking about 90% of the time.

Portland is a transportational cyclist's dream. You should try it sometime.

Gee, all your self-proclaimed virtues such as superior intellect, advanced reasoning skills, and the vast "denseness" of your writing still does nothing to mask how much of a presumptuous dumb-ass you can be at times.

You are in a cycling-oriented forum so of course the anecdotal evidence presented about road rage is obviously directed at cyclists - they're the only ones logging into this site. Here's a clue: that doesn't mean none of the road rage is directed toward other auto drivers or even that cyclists receive the majority of abuse.

You really seem warped to have this much of a hard-on for singling out Portland as some sort of cycling hell every time the city is mentioned...I don't get it. What's the point?

Portlanders are nice. So many are, after all, Midwest transplants:)

I don't get that either. What is the VC-er's issue with Portland?

I think HH is trying to pick up the slack on Portland bashing since apparently his pal Daily Commuter has found better things to do.

The other possibility is that John Forester issued the command "Attack" to his pet acolyte.

randya

It's because Portland has many miles of bike lanes and separated paths that cyclists asked for and use to the point that they are now insufficient to handle all the bicycle traffic in some parts of town, and it has been demonstrated that there is a positive correlation between these facilities and improved safety for cyclists; yet cyclists still can and do ride vehicularly in Portland, as well.

For Helmet 'my way or the highway' Head, the cognitive dissonance just blows his mind.

I can testify that the Washington, DC area is a profoundly hostile driving environment. Oddly, I encounter no motorist hostility while cycling. The road rage is not directed at cyclists.

Personally I have more road rage in the east valley than Phoenix ever gave me.

Do you Portlanders realize how easy and fun it is to razz you about the "dangers" of cycling in Portland?

Huzzah, Huzzah, well said, well said.

I would speculate more bikes on the roads in Portland, due to bike infrastructure, also provides the safety in sheer numbers corellations by increased cognizance of cyclists by drivers, regardless of a riders road position.

Build it, and they will ride.

The weather was spectacular today and I saw newbie cyclists all over town today (you can tell them by the doughnut around the middle and the sunburn ;) ); in fact everywhere I went today it seemed like there were large numbers of cyclists.

But easy razzing (AKA responses) for educational purposes (as well as fun), about all of HH's over-the-top rhetoric, nit picking and hyperbole in his 24/7 sales pitch for his unique theories and lap dog Foresterism is considered a personal insult, eh? Something to go whining wah wah in to the HH keyboard, and crying to the mods about? Isn't that right?

Yes, indeed. I also saw a Russian Supermodel or two on cool, folding bikes. :D

Yaaay! We're number 1 again! It's good to have my city excel in something other than reggeaton. Although, I do see the makeup and such while driving all the time, I have to contest the reading while driving thing. I can't imagine too many people in Miami reading anything, even to distract them from the boredom of driving.

I see we were on the top five list last year, but not this year. I wonder what changed?

trackhub

Atlanta scored fifth place on the most courteous list in 2006? Everything I've heard about Atlanta area drivers for at least the past five years is contrary to that. I understand that Atlanta drivers are downright murderous.

No surprises about Boston.

yep.:(

But that's why we've got some of the hardiest cyclists in America. If you can ride here you can ride anywhere.:p

Treespeed

I don't know if I agree with the take on Los Angeles, it's my opinion that drivers here are just motivated. Going back to Seattle was like visiting an Old Folk's home. Constant 5mph under the speed limit, spacing out, sporadic turn signal use. At least in Los Angeles, as a cyclist, you can count on drivers to get moving and be predictable, not so much in Seattle, and I say this with much love for the PNW.

holy crap, we (Phoenix) were second last year, now we're sixth? c'mon, road ragers, you can do better than that!

Or it could be that the traffic flows for cars are effin' hopeless. I had to drive from PDX to Hillsboro last week during rush hour. That tangle of roads could only be logical to a dope addict so I made several wrong turns that got me stuck in traffic that was crawling the wrong way. Beats me why they even bother to have a CM in Portland. I was there on a regular day, and if someone wanted to walk in the middle of the street, they'd find themselves blocked by cars. Much faster to lollygag on the sidewalk.

I could have easily biked the distance from PDX faster, but that wasn't an option with all the luggage. Yes, I know about MAX, but it's a 2 hr ride one way from the airport and there were other reasons I needed the car. Regardless of the mode of transport I used, it wasn't going to be much fun.

All I can say is that every time I go to Portland or any major city, it reminds me of why I'll never live in one again. Bikes are definitely a more efficient way to get around Portland than by car, but I'd hardly describe it as a good place to ride. In many places, biking or driving can even be enjoyable.

Welcome to Portland! I bet you got stuck in the I-5/I-405 loop through the city. I did that once.

Actually, I think there is one area that's tougher: The Bangor / Brewer Maine area. It has been more than a few years for me, but to ride around Bangor / Brewer, you must:

-Be impervious to cold, and I mean COLD! The four seasons are early winter, winter, late winter, and next winter.

-Be able to dodge potholes at a nanosecond.

-Besides potholes, most road surfaces are just plain nasty. Leave the thin-tired, ultra-light, made-from-alien-spacecraft-material bike home. Get a hybrid or mountain bike. Your kidneys will thank you.

-Understand that heavy drinking is what people do here. It's like breathing.

-The drivers are not nearly as openly as hostile as Boston drivers. I never got the idea that they really hated cyclists that much, but this was back in the 80's. It's just a very cold, bleak area, with lots of heavy drinking.

so funny that you just posted this. I rode out to Concord today and met up with my wife, who drove out there to meet some friends. We drove back together and as I went through the little green in Concord center, where there are a lot of crosswalks, I went quite slowly and stopped at a crosswalk to let two kids cross and almost got rammed by a soccer mom, who was royally PO'd at me for stopping and flew around me on the right with her yelling at me as she passed!

It's the whole Boston area. Brutal.:(
