Road Cycling - umm....chamios cream...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
dumb question of the day: How do I correctly (properly) use Chamios cream? I noticed as I was reading around that its mostly for the pure leather chamios. but I have mostly Voler and Santini shorts/bibs that have the newer "synthetic" materials. Do i just rub it into my skin...or layer it on thick, or layer it on very thin...and where! sorry for the newbie question, but i have this jar of the stuff, and I figure I might as well try it out for those longer rides. I am doing the Tour de Friends in two days, and figure it might come in handy for those 100+ mileage days. thanks!

Chamois cream is no longer necesary since all the bibs today use synthetic chamois. However many people still want this item so it is still available.
Basicly you rub them in the chamois. Problem is chamois today are absorbent so you really do not get the benefits.
Years back before many know even knew there were real chamois requiring them to be air dried and softened. That is why the cream was necesary.
Since I want both my skin and the chamois to breathe I don't (nor will I ever) put cream on either.
haha damn! so um what should i do with the jar of this stuff i have :crash: Will it help if i rub it on the "saddle-sores" spot on my skin if i get it after a few of the 6-8hour in-the-saddle-days, or will this just create more problems?

Chamois Creme is the only thing that should come between your butt and your shorts. Even though it was originally intended to soften the natural chamois that was used as a saddle pad, it is still useful in this age of synthetic chamois. It helps to prevent friction which leads to chafing which leads to infected saddle sores which lead to time spent off the bike. Daub a little Chamois Creme out of the jar and spread it directly onto the skin of your crotch. Work it in. It won't clog your pores, though petroleum jelly will. Never substitute Vaseline for chamois creme!

All hail the U/N!!!! I tried a form of Chamois Creme for the first time about a week ago. I'll not ride without it again.
Try it - you'll like it!
You can still use, but most of it will be absorbed by the chamois.
People also in the older days and I am sure some pro riders still use it on the seat itself to soften it.
I know I did. Riding the Turbomatic 2k kms a month or more the seat does tend to wear and the cream helped soften it and give it more life.
