This Saturday, the City Parks & Recreation Department will open the first official mountain biking trail at Highbridge Park (http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_newsroom/press_releases/press_releases.php?id=19897) in Inwood. According to the Parks Department, the "new trail system includes black diamond features, a BMX track, and a challenge trail for younger or newer riders," as well as "trailhead kiosks, trail markers and interpretive signage, natural resources monitoring, landscaping material to replant denuded areas, trail building tools, and educational pamphlets that advocate safety and environmental stewardship."

The Parks Department worked with the NYC Mountain Bike Association (http://www.nycmtb.com) on the trail. As part of grand opening festivities, there be activities, like professional jump demonstrations, an amateur "jump jam" contest, and free mountain bike service, not to mention the chance to ride demo bikes and riding clinics. The NYCMBA is also having a mountain bike race this Sunday (http://www.nycmtb.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1515).

This is a great use of a very forested park that doesn't get that much love. And via NYCMBA, here's a super high-res PDF map (http://homepage.mac.com/jbogner/nycmtb/highbridge-race-map.pdf) of the park.

I rode the trails a few months ago w/ the guys responsible for getting the trails built. Very cool and challenging.

Anybody else ridden this yet? I'm curious as to how it compares to trails out on Long Island, such as Stillwell, Rocky Point, and Glacier Ridge?

i was just wondering about it too. are parts of it gentle enough for a suspension-less fixie with fat 20" tires?
