Road Cycling - What is the "53" in "Reno 53"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I hope somebody will kindly answer this question for me.
Are the numbers in "Allez 52", or "Reno 53", or "Via Nirone 55" centimeters and if so, what is being measured?
These numbers do not seem to correspond to any of the geometry measurements.

My guess is that they're chainring teeth. I guess I should be "BlazingPedals58."

Maybe it's a stupid question, but I decided I didn't think these numbers were arbitrary and I don't know what they are a measure of. I thought that my old MTB was called a 19" because it had a 19" seat tube. I measured it and it was 19" from centre of the BB to top of the seat tube, which makes sense, but the geometry on these road bikes doesn't seem to relate to the size numbers they are given. Just curious.
