A few years back, I recall, Toronto's municipal government was actually in favour of Critical Mass. They listed it as a cycling event on their web pages and encouraged people to join. Later on the view seemed to change - I'm not sure if the police pressured the city or the city set the police on the cyclists, but either way there were arrests and the city prohibited its employees from participating in the ride. But today I was looking at the city's calendar for the Bike Week events, and they are listing Critical Ass as one of the events, with phone # for organizers and and even the CM motto "We're not blocking traffic, we are traffic". Yes, Critical Ass is not the same as Critical Mass - it's the same as Critical Mass minus some clothing! Surely it's ridiculous to oppose the latter and officially support the former. What is this - a goof-up by someone in the city? Or a deliberate stance: the police pressured us into withdrawing support for CM, but since this is not CM we'll gladly use the loophole and jump on the opportunity to support it. Just curious...
