OK, I finally had to respond - you have caught me enough times when I see the thread title.
I live in Lancaster. And we have a covered bridge. But we have no century as you describe here. Of course my state is NH. :p

Ug...I set the post up and have ridden in this thing for the last 3 years but have no clue if I can make it yet...I really hope to see everyone in a few weeks.
So how many do we have signed up?

I am still hoping for a lift from South Jersey or Philly. I would really love to do this ride this year. I will cover all travel costs.
Cheers,
Brian
PM me if you still need a ride. I'll be driving up from Edison, NJ.

Maybe we can create a roll call by simply adding the names of those going by editing your original post.
For instance:
Registered So Far
Grasschopper (Keeping our fingers crossed :D)
TrekDen (plus 5 others hopefully)
(and so on)
I really want to go to this but my original transportation ideas fell through. Is the van thing happening?
(I'm coming from either Philly or NYC)

I am registered for the ride and staying at the Hampton Inn Sat. night. Coming from NC by way of Lake Placid, NY.
Well technically I am not signed up yet. But I will be shortly.

Did some searching, and added who I thought were interested. If I missed you, or added you by mistake please feel free to let us know, and we can edit the list.
Looks like a large contigent of possible BF riders. We may need a permit, so we don't get charged with unlawful assembly :D

Well, I have some news. Some of you may think it is good, and some of you may think it is bad...
(somebody at least pretend that you think it is bad news, ok???) ;)
For 2 reasons I won't be attending.
First, I have only been on my bike a few times so far this year. (I would remedy that easily and have been known to cram for "exams" at the last minute)
Frankly, the real issue is that I have an opportunity to be somewhere else with someone that means a whole lot to me...
But, I do hope to see y'all next year.
I promise to be in good enough shape to hang the whole way by next year. Or at least give it a good shot!
EDIT:
If the registration is transferable, someone can use mine, PM me, and I'll send my registration info...

It is only about a 9 hour drive to a Lancaster with covered bridges and a metric Century!

Darn-it-all Darwin:( I was looking forward to seeing you again this year, and I'm sure others will feel the same way. Hope you have a good time, and we'll see you next year.
Yea actually Darwin's concern is partially mine. It has been a MONTH since I was on the bike. If I don't start like this weekend cranking out some miles I am concerned about the ride as well.

Awwwww, Darwin! I, for one, think that for us this is bad news . . . but it sounds as though for you it is very nice news :)
Priorities are what they are, and if you have the chance to be with someone who is important to you, then it's absolutely our loss!
There's always next year . . . and if you're interested, the Harrisburg Bike club's annual century is coming up in September - and it's a very, very nice ride. 25, 50, and 100 mile options with a whole lot of good food at the start/finish. Think I'll have to start a new thread at some point. . .
Darwin, you'll be missed!!! Now, go out and get some miles in on that bike, k?

Dude, we will be riding through Amish country. The locals will be out in their long dresses and black pants riding their old steel bikes while kicking our butts up the hills.
We will ALL look out of place :D

And most of those Amish/Mennonite girls in dresses and boys in long pants riding their 50 lb fixies could kick any of our behinds on the rollers.
I grew up in the Lancaster county Mennonite culture, and have to admit that when we go by those kids on our lightweight road bikes wearing bike weenie gear, riding just for the pleasure of it, while those kids are leaving church on their way to go do non-frivolous, productive things I feel a little bit . . . guilty. The PA Dutch roots run deep, I suppose.
But then I get over it. :D
That reminds me of a time when I used to live in Lancaster County. I was out on a ride, all decked out in the typical super hero costume: shorts so tight you can tell what religion I am, obnoxious pro team billboard jersey, space alien helmet and wrap around sunglasses, etc. Next to me at a stop light were a few Amish or Mennonite women with their full length dresses, cruiser bikes, bonnets, etc... The culture contrast (if I may take the liberty of using the term "culture" to apply to myself) would have made for a great photo!

If they were on bikes they were Mennonite. Amish don't ride bikes. I must admit the thought occurred to me last year on the ride in Amish country as I saw some of the trim younng ladies in their modest attire while I had my 300+ pounds of old man flesh stuffed into my skin tight cycling suit... THey could have dropped me on their cruisers without breaking a sweat...
It was quite a contrast in styles.
I was in the area a few weeks ago, and saw a sign in one of the little shops talking about the ecologically sensitive vehicles of the Amish, and I forget what it said in its entirety, but the last line was, "remember not to step in the exhaust" So to those of you riding in the Lancaster Covered bridges ride... Remember to look out for the Amish vehicle's exhaust. ;)
And specifically for the Metric Century, remember that when riding in groups it is good practice to point out hazards and announce the hazard for those behind you. In this case, point at and call, "Exhaust!"

Anybody want to split a hotel room for that Friday and /or Saturday night the weekend of the ride. Just trying to defray some of the cost. PM me if you're interested. I'm looking forward to seeing the familiar faces and some new ones too. Don't forget we will have a "casual" saturday evening ride for those who are interested as well.

I'll be there but I'm still doubting my ability to keep up. I live in the Lancaster area but just started riding about 2 months ago and am excited to give this a try.
What kind of pace do you guys normally keep on these? When I ride I can usually maintain a 18mph average over 40 miles. Is this good enough or should I just plan on doing part of it?
I lood forward to riding with all of you!

You can do it. I have never been able to hold even close to an 18mph pace over even 20 miles and I kept up last year.

This will be our first organized ride in many years. We're looking forward to it. Does anyone know if the course is the same every year? Are maps and que sheets posted on the web prior to the ride?

The course was different in last year from the 2005 route, so I'm not sure if it will be the same this year. The pace isn't really that fast. A word of advice to any newcomers......
Bring plenty of your own ride food, gels, powerbars etc... other than the lunch area which offered many food items the rest stops only offered water. And don't leave your said ride food in your hotel room like a dumb *ss and almost bonk, thus having to mooch food off the other Bike Forum members!:o :p :D

Believe me, this is not an understatement!! The ride in general is not a very hard terrain wise, but you have to consider the time between breakfast, and lunch. By the time we all meet at the ride start, and get rolling it's around 2 - 2.5 hours since you've eaten breakfast. Add the time it takes to ride, regroup at rest stops, and get to lunch, and I think you'll see what we mean.

Early Start = few dissapointments at the rest stops.
Just sayin...

The earlier the start the better for me. I'll be riding over from the hotel so whenever everyone wants to get going is fine.

Good advice on the food. Thanks. We'd like to be off early too. How soon should we plan to be at registration to get off at 7:30? I believe (officially, at least) that's the earliest start time.

And I, for one, was proud to share a coupla' Sport beans with you, C17:)
To reiterate what Rich said, there is typically only water at the rest stops (weak Gatorade at lunch), so it's a good move to bring your own drink mix if you count on that sort of thing.
Personally, I prefer to just bring what I need for a ride of that length in hot weather; then I'm not at the mercy of whatever's available and can stick to what I know works for me.
