Hey,

The stock bontrager saddle that came on my Trek 6000 isnt very comfortable...it definetly starts to hurt after a while. I was looking at a padded memory foam type seat made by bontrager for about 35 at the LBS, but do yall have any recommendations?

Should I look into getting some padded shorts as well? Which ones?

Thanks! :)

How long have you been riding. Saddles aren't comfortable. Either your ass gets used to them, or they don't. At least from what I have found. My ass like WTB saddles.

Yeah i did kinda notice that it hurt more the first time than any other time I have ridden...bout 5 times now

Yes.

As you ride more you will get used to it. Try riding with more weight on the pedals too.

the most popular shorts are the ones you like best.
some folks swear by baggies, others, like me ,swear by just plain lycra.
I am not afraid for folks to see my endowments so Ive not seen the need to go baggy.
Canaris are my favorite but a ton of folks will tell you Pearl Izumi are the only way to go.
I like WTB saddles too but am currently running a Performance "Forte classic" because I got tired of spending $ on something that doesnt last. I really like it a lot. it doesnt chafe on long rides like my WTBs did

I like PI Attacks and a pair I got from REI best. I bought an expensive pair of PI's but they didn't fit right. It's trial and error.

The "best mountain biking saddle" is the one that is most comfortable for you & that isn't in your way while manuevering around. Yes, cycling shorts help. For shorts lycra/ spandex shorts are best imo.
If you are connsidering choices of lycra shorts, Volers are quite good. They even send a SASE in case you need to send them back for another size along with some candy to suck on while checkin out your new shorts. In addition, If you get the IMBA model $5 of it goes to the IMBA.

Totally agree. If your saddle is comfortable when you first sit on it, either it's because your ass has calluses or it's an "easy chair" -- and easy chair saddles get more uncomfortable the longer you ride (i.e. 20+ miles/2+ hours).

My ass likes Specialized saddles, although the V (Pure-V, Speed-V, etc) line of WTBs feel good too. My nether bits like the cut-away channel down the middle, no matter the brand.

You have only used the bontrager 5 times? In the spirit of being helpful, I also ditched the bontrager on my Gary Fisher (probably the same one you have) and went to a Specialized Indie. The indie probably isnt for everyone but its a LaZboy compared that bontrager and seems perfectly suited to me (on this bike). For $30, its worth experimenting with anyhow.

The bontrager didnt give me any problems until I had put on over 1000 miles. Good luck.

Oh yeah, when shopping for saddles at your lbs be sure to give them all the "thumb test".

+1

Saddles are so personal, there really isn't one saddle that fits everyone best. One of my riding buddies favorite saddle that he swears is the most comfortable he has ever ridden happens to be the worst ass-hatchet I've ever ridden on.

lol, smashy doesn't like that pic.

i don't weight a ton, so my saddles are usually pretty low on the cushioning, i just like something thats flat and sleek.

WTB +++. Don't remember the model but it has the "love channel". Used to really like the Specialized body geometry saddles but found they were just a little to wide to get really behind them on the descents. I put the BG on the commuter bike now and couldn't think of a better seat.

Real nice.. each cheek will move independently... it even turns your hardtail into a fullsuspension.

There is also a premium ultru wide version:

I was curious about this sort of saddle actually... although I often find I ride up more on the nose of the saddle when climbing.. This wouldn't be much of an option with a saddle like that (as above).

Always good to keep the weight off the perineum.

also... the nose of a saddle aids in your balance; how can you control the bike with your inner thighs on this fruity lookin' thing?

1+ for WBT. . .best saddle in my stable. Found it quite by accident; it came that way "off the shelf" on my '06 Kona King Kikapu.

I have a WTB Devo saddle and it treats me well. I really dont liek my Bontrager saddle. My Selle Italia saddle is decent, althogh I have no idea what model it is.
